ABOUT SAMARITAN BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CONSUMER ADVOCACY MODEL

On the banks of the Miami River in midtown Dayton sits an outpatient treatment facility for individuals with physical, cognitive, and developmental disabilities who are struggling with substance use disorder. This is Samaritan Behavioral Health's Consumer Advocacy Model (CAM), formerly known as Wright State University DBA Consumer Advocacy Model. It's among the 74.1 percent of rehabs in Ohio that also treat co-occurring mental-health disorders, and among the 57.2 percent that offer services in sign language.

CAM is operated by Samaritan Behavioral Health, a county-contracted agency and mental-health training center originally founded by Good Samaritan Hospital in 1965.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All clients start off with a diagnostic assessment, which is used to determine the best course of treatment. When appropriate, new clients are also evaluated by a psychiatrist, and might be put on a course of medication.

Once a client enters programming, CAM offers a traditional roster of treatments: individual, group, and family therapy, plus case management services and urinalysis screening. Reflecting its target community of individuals with disabilities, CAM offers psychiatric supportive treatment in the community and communication assistance for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Staff members will also advocate on clients' behalf and provide referrals to community services when appropriate.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff, however, the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center two out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would not recommend treatment at CAM. "Only option ordered by court. Not one of them had anything positive to say," the anonymous reviewer wrote, also calling into question the program's efficacy. They gave the facility four stars for its administration and discharge practice, but just two stars for its holistic offerings and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and one star for its family participation and counseling options.

Secondary sites don't currently yield any reviews of CAM in particular, but they do provide some feedback on Samaritan Behavioral Health as a whole, and it's mixed, skewing positive, with average ratings of 4.4 stars based on 16 opinions on Facebook and 3.1 stars based on nine reviews on Google.[1] [2]

Many of these reviews were posted by clients' loved ones, who repeatedly complained of administrative problems such as difficulties getting their children's prescriptions refilled, scheduling appointments, and getting staff to call them back with information. "My daughter goes here . This is the second month in a row she has ran out of medicine due to this Officeβs mistakes. So she has to go through withdrawals yet again," Crystal wrote in a typical comment on Google. The positive reviews tended to be vague, praising the center's staff and efficacy. "The staff are super duper nice and caring," S.W. wrote in another representative review on Google.

FINANCING

CAM doesn't currently provide any information about its costs, though services are partially funded by local counties, suggesting that treatment is offered at reduced costs. Some other Samaritan Behavioral Health Programs are offered free of charge for uninsured clients, suggesting a commitment to serving uninsured and underinsured clients. However, the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's affordability gave it just two out of five stars.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Samaritan-Behavioral-Health/100876399957171
[2] GoogleReviews
