Editorial Review

ABOUT ACCESS HOSPITAL

Located three miles southeast of central Dayton, Ohio, Access Hospital offers inpatient treatment for adults struggling with substance use disorder, mental health disorders, or a dual diagnosis. Services for addiction consist of medical detox (one of 21 hospital-based detox programs in the state of Ohio), as well as short-term inpatient care.

Access also provides outpatient programs, both on-site at Access Hospital and through three outpatient facilities in Columbus. Access Hospital is among the 24.7 percent of addiction treatment facilities in Ohio that are accredited by the Joint Commission.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients meet with a clinician for an initial biopsychosocial assessment, which helps determine a diagnosis and appropriate treatment approach. Clients who need to detox are monitored 24 hours a day and prescribed medications, as needed, to minimize the symptoms of withdrawal. Both during detox and as part of longer-term programming, Access Hospital uses the opioid agonist Suboxone to ease withdrawal from opioids. Suboxone is used at 37.9 percent of addiction treatment facilities in Ohio.

Access clients might continue taking Suboxone for weeks or months following their initial detox, though the ultimate goal is complete abstinence. The center's medication-assisted therapy (MAT) program also uses the opioid antagonist Vivitrol (in use at 41.1 percent of Ohio rehabs) to treat both alcohol and opioid addictions.

Along with medication-assisted therapy and crisis stabilization, individuals recovering from chemical dependency also receive a range of rehabilitative programming to promote lasting sobriety. Clients participate in individual, group, and family counseling sessions, and attend educational workshops on substance use disorder, healthy living skills, nutrition, coping skills, and relapse prevention techniques.

Rehabs.com survey results indicate that clients may also be introduced to the 12-Steps. In addition, individuals struggling with co-occurring mental health disorders may receive ongoing medication management and other psychiatric treatment, to help address mental health concerns.

Programming to treat a primary psychiatric disorder consists of pharmacological intervention and ongoing medication management, individual and group therapy, and educational classes on stress management and coping skills.

Discharge planning begins at admission and may include referrals to further treatment or community resources, and/or help ensuring the client's healthcare, housing, and social needs will be provided upon discharge. Clients may also be encouraged to enroll in the hospital’s outpatient program, which provides many of the same services as inpatient care.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Access Hospital employs a multidisciplinary team of medical, nursing, and psychiatric staff. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave the survey metric two stars and a four out of five-star rating.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Access Hospital offers patients a structured, supervised environment and 24/7 access to medical attention. Those struggling with chemical dependency are housed in a separate unit from individuals struggling with a primary psychiatric disorder. The hospital features a basketball court and outdoor patio, where patients may smoke. And although regular meals are offered, patients may cook their own meals or have special meals delivered.

All three of the individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's exercise and leisure activities offered a rating of three stars, while the facility's cleanliness and upkeep received ratings of two, four, and five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Both of the alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Access Hospital perfect five-star ratings for its effectiveness, though only one of them would recommend treatment at the facility. Both reviewers concurred that the program was somewhat bare-bones, giving the center a one-star rating and a two-star rating for its holistic offerings. The less satisfied client, Kelly, also gave the program just two stars for its counseling options, and wrote that the facility was "more like a Jail." However, she gave the facility five stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, while alum Matt gave the hospital five stars for the overall quality of its individual and group counseling.

Access Hospital currently has mixed feedback on secondary sites, with average ratings of 3.4 out of five stars based on 41 reviews on Google and 3.8 stars based on 38 opinions on Facebook (where the facility can manage its own page).[1] [2]

The negative reviews repeatedly cite dirty conditions, rude or unhelpful staff, and trouble getting the correct medications. "Staff doesn't know what there doing. Bed bugs and mice in facility. This place has a far way to go to become a decent facility. It starts with the staff," Brendan wrote in a representative negative comment on Google.

However, numerous reviewers thanked the facility and its staff for their long-term recovery, often noting that though Dayton Hospital certainly wasn't a luxury facility, its programs were highly effective. "The staff and Doctor was tough but thank god they were. I was a heroin addict for 13 years and i still am but for today im clean... I know you all worked double time for me," Peggy wrote in a typical review on Facebook.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend Dayton Hospital. "Good communication with family, outpatient treatment for after discharge," they wrote anonymously, though they supported the impression given by alumni reviews that the program was somewhat bare-bones, rating holistic offerings just one star and adding: "Not many groups or activities offered." In addition, they gave the program four stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, three stars for its family participation, and two stars for its counseling options.

FINANCING

Access Hospital accepts Medicare and most private insurances (accepted at 48.9 and 76 percent of Ohio-based facilities, respectively). The hospital can also bill Medicaid, but only as a secondary provider. Self-payment is accepted, but self-paying clients must provide an initial deposit covering five days of hospitalization. Any balance is repaid on discharge. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the hospital's affordability gave it a one-star rating and a four-star rating.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/AccessHospitalDayton/reviews/?ref=page_internal
