ABOUT STEPS RECOVERY CENTERS — ST. GEORGE

Steps Recovery Centers is a private rehab network that operates four locations across Utah, in Draper, Payson, St. George, and Orem. The St. George facility, in a suburban location bordering southwestern Utah's famous red rock mountains, offers residential rehab services for adults as well as social detox — that is, monitoring and emotional support, but no medical treatment, during withdrawal. It's one of 70 residential treatment centers in the State of Utah.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Steps Recovery’s website, the center uses the 12-step model of recovery, and breaks treatment into three stages: intervention and social detox, diagnosis and customized care, and lifelong sober living.

The first step, intervention and detox, offers trained interventionists for clients and families who need them. The detox program provides 24-hour withdrawal support in a non-medical setting.

The second step, diagnosis and customized care, includes residential treatment as well as an array of outpatient options, from a partial hospitalization program (PHP) through to standard outpatient. Outpatient support is provided at other facilities in the network. Along with 12-step participation, clients participate in a range of recreational and adventure therapies, such as yoga, equine therapy, sailing, a ropes course, rafting, Tai Chi, team sports, as well as trips to the movies, arcades, bowling alleys, and museums.

The final step is sober living, defined as transitional care to a stable and sober life. The program includes lifelong aftercare, including the unusual promise (stated on the facility's website) that anyone who relapses may return free of charge, though there may be some nominal residency fees.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Steps Recovery Centers’ website notes that the treatment team includes a board-certified physician, a Ph.D-level licensed clinical social worker, and licensed counselors. All three of the individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave it five out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility's website indicates that the St. George facility is a modern, light-filled center with a fireplace in the sitting room, a ping-pong table, and plenty of outdoor space with hiking trails in the vicinity. The center's cleanliness and upkeep has stellar reports from individuals polled by Rehabs.com, in the form of three five-star ratings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave very positive reviews. One anonymous reviewer gave the facility five out of five stars in all of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, its counseling options, and its holistic offerings. “Great listeners, truly wants to help patients succeed,” they wrote.

Fellow alum R.H. described her stay as an “overall great experience,” and noted that she would strongly recommend treatment at this location, though she noted the “high turn over of staff” as a weakness, and gave the center only three stars for its accommodations and counseling options.

On secondary sites, Steps' St. George location has mostly positive feedback, with a few exceptions. The center has a 4.1 out of five-star average rating based on 18 reviews on Google, and on Yelp, a one-star rating and a five-star rating.[1] [2] The negative reviewers repeatedly echoed R.H.'s complaint about high staff turnover, and reported feeling that the center was more interested in making money than in helping people. "I just spent 60 days at steps. The first week two of the main people got fired and a third quit in protest. A week later another councilor quit," Michelle wrote on Google in one typical comment.

However, numerous reviewers reported that Steps had turned their lives around. These alumni often stressed how difficult their lives had become before treatment, and how much support the staff at Steps provided, as well as how genuinely caring they found staff members. "It is a very safe environment and a lot of fun activities go on all day. I would not have been able to get sober without the staff at steps," Brady wrote in a typical comment on Google.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Both of the loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend Steps in St. George. One anonymous loved one, who was polled on the center's performance in 15 metrics, gave it just three stars for its holistic offerings, but five stars for its family participation and ability to treat co-occurring disorders. They described the center's staff as "very understanding, firm, well trained and compassionate," but added that they would have liked the team to be a little tougher.

Loved one Ray particularly praised the center's aftercare program, and also gave five-star ratings for Steps' holistic offerings, family programming, addiction treatment, and mental health treatment.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Staff who posted on Indeed.com gave mixed feedback, in the form of a one-star, a four-star, and a five-star rating.[3] All three reviewers expressed their commitment to the clients and the company's mission. While the negative reviewer complained of problems with management and their fellow staff members, which in their view led to a low success rate, the other two stressed how hard-working and committed the whole team is. "I loved the work, the clients, the way the program grew and changed as they always sought to become better and more responsive to the client's needs," wrote an anonymous former therapist.

FINANCING

Steps is in-network with several insurers, and accepts others on an out-of-network basis. It's also one of the 121 facilities in Utah that accepts federal military insurance — namely, TriCare. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's affordability gave it a three-star rating and two five-star ratings.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/steps-recovery-center-st-george?osq=Steps+Recovery+Center
[3] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Steps-Recovery-Center/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Saint+George%2C+UT
