ABOUT TEEN CHALLENGE - SAN ANTONIO

Teen Challenge is a national, nonprofit network of faith-based rehabilitation programs for people of all ages, founded by the Reverend David Wilkerson in New York in 1958. The network's San Antonio outpost offers gender-separate, long-term, residential Christian discipleship programs for both men and women. Both the men's and the women's facilities are located in the countryside 15 miles south of San Antonio.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The program lasts 12 months, and its central components are Bible study, work therapy, and a 13-week intensive Christian counseling course called The Ultimate Journey.

The Ultimate Journey is split into three phases: unpacking self-deception, abandoning self-reliance, and embracing self-surrender. Overall, the course is designed to bring individuals into total alignment with and total reliance on God. All residents also receive individual mentoring and life-skills training, and have access to GED classes.

The organization operates a thrift store that employs both men and women on the program as part of the work therapy component. Women may alternatively work as commercial or residential cleaners for hire. For men, there's a broader range of work therapy options: construction, car detailing, tree trimming, carpentry, painting, landscaping, and more. In addition, men can participate in a work-study program, receiving certifications in vocational areas such as food management, driver safety, auto mechanic training, and finance and budgeting.

The Lifeline program offers three months' worth of weekly aftercare meetings; there is also an optional 7 to 12 month internship program that trains graduates to become ministers, particularly at Teen Challenge.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff, however, the two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility a one-star rating and a four-star rating for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Both the men's and the women's facilities are set on the same 108-acre campus. There are beds for 27 women; it's not clear how many beds are available for men. Both of the individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility two stars for its accommodations; the center's cleanliness gained a three-star and a four-star rating, and its meals and nutrition, a two-star and a three-star rating. "The food is awful," one reviewer added anonymously.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date would not recommend Teen Challenge's San Antonio outpost. "There is an 8 hour work day for each person, which I could not do, so I left early. Be prepared to put your life on hold for a year," they wrote anonymously, though they also noted: "I was able to restore my relationship with God. I left early, after 3 months, but came away with a whole new attitude to pain medications, which I have to take." They gave the facility four stars for its treatment effectiveness, two stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and one star for its holistic offerings, family participation, and counseling options.

Secondary sites yielded mostly positive feedback at the time of this writing: a 3.8-star average rating based on five reviews on Google.[1] The single negative reviewer, who gave the facility just one star, left no accompanying commentary. Of the remaining reviews, two credited Teen Challenge with saving the reviewer's life. "This place gives you a safe place to live where you can get clean while you get to know Jesus Christ and what he did for you long ago. Teen Challenge has taught me good work ethics and has restored all my broken relationships with my family, including my kids," A.M. wrote in the other accompanying comment.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mixed feedback. "They instil great work ethics and spirituality," they wrote anonymously, but added: "Some of the staff are not well trained." They gave the center four stars for its family participation and its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, three stars for its treatment effectiveness and holistic offerings, and two stars for its counseling options.

FINANCING

There's a $1,500 induction fee, and once they've gained employment toward the end of the program, residents pay a proportion of their earnings toward treatment.

[1] https://goo.gl/T5YN1u
