Editorial Review

ABOUT PHOENIX HOUSE - HILL A. FEINBERG ACADEMY

Phoenix House is a large, nonprofit treatment provider that offers more than 130 programs around the US. Located a few miles north of downtown Dallas, the Hill A. Feinberg Academy provides residential and outpatient services for adolescents (ages 13 to 17) and outpatient care for adults. The center can accommodate those struggling with both chemical dependency and dual diagnosis.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Before beginning treatment, clients participate in a substance-use assessment to identify their particular needs. Phoenix House’s treatment approach blends evidence-based treatment techniques, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma-informed therapy, with 12-step immersion.

On the adolescent residential program, clients participate in individual and group therapy, including gender-specific groups. Families are invited to attend weekly family therapy sessions, and multifamily groups, educational sessions, and visits on weekends. Residents also attend educational classes on relapse prevention techniques and life skills. If necessary, medication management and other psychiatric services are available, along with medical and dental care. Along with core programming, residents have the opportunity to participate in regular workouts and meditation sessions. And to address the needs of the adolescent clientele, Phoenix House offers a Dallas Independent School District credit recovery program to help residents continue in their education.

Once a client has completed residential treatment, the Hill A. Feinberg Academy provides personalized aftercare referrals and encourages them to step down to its after-school outpatient program. This outpatient program can also be accessed as entry-level care.

The Hill A. Feinberg Academy's adult outpatient services comprise individual, group, and family counseling; self-help groups; life-skills classes; and case management services.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at the Hill A. Feinberg Academy is primarily made up of master's-level clinicians. The center also employs a psychiatrist, a nurse, and licensed chemical dependency counselors. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave it a two-star, a four-star, and a five-star rating.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Hill A. Feinberg Academy offers ample outdoor space, with sitting areas and a basketball court. The center can accommodate most dietary restrictions, so long as staff are given notice. The five individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility an average rating of four stars for its cleanliness, and the four individuals polled on the accommodations gave them a 2.75-star average.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

All three of the alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mostly negative feedback. Two of the three reviewers described the staff as rude and uncaring: "The staff didnt take it serious at all. The counselors are rude and dont care," D.E.G. wrote. However, the third reviewer, Justin, disagreed, writing: "They were great people... Staff were helpful people."

But Justin and another reviewer complained about the treatment offered at the Hill A. Feinberg Academy. "Other than 12 step meetings and book studies, there was not much more to learn from," Justin wrote; "The groups were unproductive," D.E.G. added. Fellow alum Joshua disagreed, writing that the center's single redeeming feature was its "caring and understanding counseling" — though he added: "You could not pay me enough to send my child to the Phoenix House."

The two reviewers polled on the facility's holistic offerings, family participation, counseling options, and ability to treat co-occurring disorders gave the Hill A. Feinberg Center one- and two-star ratings in each of these categories.

Secondary sites yielded mixed reviews at the time of this writing: a 3.5-star average rating based on 19 reviews on Google.[1] More than one reviewer described being "kicked out" of the facility and experiencing frustrations with the staff. However, a handful of reviewers appeared to have had excellent experiences of both the staff and the program: "The staff at this facility are some of the most important people I ever met, they all helped me so much, they helped me grow into the Woman I am still becoming," D.G. wrote in a representative review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Of the two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date, one would recommend the program and the other would not. "Connect with teen residents. Strongly recommend," was the appraisal of positive reviewer Daniel, who gave the facility three stars for its holistic offerings, four stars for its counseling options and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and five stars for its treatment effectiveness and family participation.

“The treatment seemed very insurance driven & when insurance stopped paying, he was discharged without adequate plan for continued recovery,” the other loved one wrote anonymously, giving the facility two stars for its holistic offerings, its family involvement, and the overall quality of its addiction treatment.

"I was not satisfied with the quality of care the counselors apppeared to have their own stressors on the job. My son would tell me that the counselors never saw him... I was very dissatisfied the director and people in charge did not have a clue as to what they were doing," an anonymous parent wrote in a two-star review on CiteHealth.[2]

FINANCING

Phoenix House is in-network with most major insurance providers; the Hill A. Feinberg Academy in particular notes relationships with insurers including Aetna, Cigna, Humana, and United Behavioral Healthcare, as well as managed care plans such as Medicaid, CHIP, and Northstar. The center also accepts self-pay.

[1] https://goo.gl/gZ32kq
[2] http://citehealth.com/reviews/6262
