Editorial Review

ABOUT SHEPHERD HILL – ALCOHOL & DRUG REHABILITATION CENTER

Located in the community of Newark, OH, 30 miles east of Columbus, Shepherd Hill is a nationally accredited treatment center for adults struggling with substance abuse. Shepherd Hill offers short- and long-term residential treatment, an intensive outpatient program, outpatient, and aftercare services.

To minimize the discomfort of withdrawal, medically monitored detoxification is available on site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Shepherd Hill is a department of Licking Memorial Hospital, in a separate building located ¼ mile away from the main hospital. Upon admission, clients participate in an initial substance abuse and psychiatric assessment. Incoming clients can also take advantage of a 72-hour, residential-based evaluation that utilizes a physical exam, functional assessment, and biopsychosocial history.

During inpatient treatment, clinicians help residents to identify relapse patterns and recognize pathological defenses. Treatment may include individual and group therapy, and educational lectures. Residents are also introduced to 12-step fellowship, and family education sessions are held bi-monthly. Medication management may also be incorporated into treatment to address co-occurring mental health issues.

If necessary, clinicians may recommend residents stay longer in its extended care program. Although similar to traditional care, extended care slowly integrates residents back into the community by allowing weekend passes home.

Typically lasting between six and eight weeks, the intensive outpatient program (IOP) involves attending three to five sessions weekly. Clients go to “Ask the Doc” sessions, participate in an educational component of treatment, and have family programming. To promote lasting recovery, Shepherd Hill offers a no-cost aftercare program, which consists of weekly, counselor-facilitated support groups.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Led by a medical director, Shepherd Hill employs a multidisciplinary team of physicians, clinical psychologists, licensed chemical dependency counselors, social workers, occupational therapists, nurses, and case managers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Shepherd Hill’s campus is comprised of two cottage-like living facilities, a cafeteria, large lecture halls, and outdoor spaces. Residents are not allowed to bring cell phones or personal computers. The five individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the quality of accommodations gave them an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com provided mixed feedback regarding the facility. While one alum felt the program was somewhat effective, reporting excellent staff support, the other two clients were more critical of the program, and were particularly critical of the staff. Alum T.F. gave a two out of five star rating for the staff’s level of experience, and wrote: “Staff is not able to help with ur symptoms.”

Alum Aron reported a negative experience due to medication issues and the facility's reaction to the situation. All of the alumni gave three out of five stars or lower for its opportunities for exercise and leisure and its holistic offerings.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Four loved ones provided feedback for Shepherd Hill to Rehabs.com to date. The feedback was mixed, with one fairly negative, one neutral, and two positive reviews. While two loved ones provided perfect five-star ratings for treatment effectiveness, others critiqued the program’s reliance on medication, and at least two loved ones suggested that the program was too relaxed. One loved one wrote that the facility “may be a little to easy on patients,” but described the staff as “nice and caring.”

Loved ones were mixed on the program’s aftercare planning. While one family member claimed the program offered “no continuity of care,” reporting that her ex-husband was quickly discharged after detoxification, another loved one wrote the facility had a “great after care program.” Three out of four loved ones gave four stars or higher for family participation.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, Shepherd Hill accepts a range of private health insurance plans. It also works with M-Lend Financial, a third-party lender that provides financing for self-paying clients.
