ABOUT CITY GOSPEL MISSION RECOVERY PROGRAM

Established by one of the founders of Proctor & Gamble, City Gospel Mission is a nonprofit organization that has been dedicated to helping Cincinnati’s homeless and needy recover since 1924. Today, the Christian nonprofit serves more than 6,800 adults and 3,500 youth annually through its food and shelter, employment readiness, and long-term, gender-specific recovery programs. It is one of 75 long-term residential programs in Ohio. Detox services are not offered at the facility.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment is gender-specific and typically lasts 10 months to a year but could be longer or shorter for each participant. As the nonprofit’s webpage notes, this approach allows men and women opportunity to pace themselves in their recovery and make foundational and long-term changes of lifestyle and behavior.

During residential care, clients learn the importance of setting realistic goals and other practical skills under JobsPlus, City Gospel Mission’s employment network, available in both traditional and advanced tracks. In Ohio, the mission is among the 42.5 percent of facilities to provide employment counseling or training for clients.

Spiritual development is also a major component of the facility. Clients may attend worship services, attend Bible study classes, and participate in spiritual counseling. A robust aftercare program is also available to all program graduates. Mentoring, support meetings, and life skills training classes help clients transition the gap between rehab and self-sufficiency.

In addition to its recovery programming, City Gospel Mission serves meals to over 100 homeless individuals daily, offers space for up to 74 men at its overnight shelter, and runs transitional housing services for many more. Clients in the recovery program may perform tasks to help support the mission.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Per its job openings webpage, City Gospel Mission employs discipleship coordinators, individuals who help program participants transition to independent living. Volunteers also play a role in helping others through the recovery process.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the nonprofit regarding the living arrangements and related offerings of its residential programs, though the one Rehabs.com survey respondent polled to date shared four- and perfect five-star ratings for its meals, accommodations, and level of cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Commentary provided by the single Rehabs.com survey respondent, an anonymous alum, was mixed. They found the program helpful for those recovering from alcoholism, but noted that it “may not have the medical expertise” for a “hard drug user.” Despite this nuance, the alum gave ratings of four stars or more for the co-occurring treatment, the counseling options, and the holistic opportunities.

City Gospel Mission also fared extremely well across secondary sources. To date, it has average ratings of 4.4 and 4.6 out of five stars, respectively, from 75 Google reviewers and 241 Facebook users.[1][2] "Saved my life, truly a gift from above" wrote Thomas in a representative review. "Once again thank all of you for my life.."

FINANCING

City Gospel Mission accepts monetary gifts that directly fund its meal program as well as clothing, personal hygiene products, and other everyday items. The single alum polled on the facility's affordability gave a rating of three stars.

CONCLUSION

In 2018, City Gospel Mission began its Jobs Van project. In an effort to reduce panhandling and homelessness in Cincinnati, the Jobs Van picks up panhandlers and pays them $45 for five hours of work, which typically includes picking up litter around the city.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/CityGospelMission/reviews/?ref=page_internal
