ABOUT VETERANS AFFAIRS MEDICAL CENTER NORTH CAROLINA: SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAM

Located five miles east of downtown Asheville, the Charles George VA Medical Center provides a range of medical and other treatments for local veterans. Among the center's offerings are residential and outpatient treatment for veterans struggling with substance use disorder, as well as treatment for a range of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. The center is one of nine rehab facilities in North Carolina run by a federal government agency, and one of 21.4 percent of rehabs in the state that offer dedicated treatment for veterans.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The admission process consists of a confidential screening to assess the nature of the individual's addiction, and therefore the best course of action. The length of a veteran's stay in resident treatment will vary depending on their needs, though according to an information packet published by the hospital, most inpatients stay for 28 days. All residential clients are also required to commit to 90 days of aftercare counseling.

Treatment uses a combination of 12-step programming and individual and group therapy. The center offers an extensive list of group therapy options, many of them centered on evidence-based practices, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Seeking Safety, and motivational interviewing (MI). In response to the particular needs of veterans, there are also many groups dedicated to discussing and processing trauma in its various forms, including PTSD.

Clients being treated for substance use disorder also receive training in how to prevent relapse and in a variety of life skills, such as job readiness, positioning the center among the 30.5 percent of North Carolina rehabs that offer employment counseling.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave it a two-star rating and two four-star ratings.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, the three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's cleanliness gave it two four-star ratings and a five-star rating. The facility's exercise and leisure offerings receive more mixed feedback of two two-star ratings and a five-star rating.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date, W.S., would not recommend the facility. Though W.S. praised the "cost for veterans if free," they complained of the center's unwillingness to use pharmacological therapies. They gave the Asheville VA four stars for its holistic offerings and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, but just two stars for its family participation and its counseling options, and one star for the effectiveness of its treatment.

Secondary sites don't currently offer any reviews of the substance misuse program in particular, but they do offer extensive feedback on the Ashevilla VA Medical Center as a whole, and it's mostly positive. The center has average ratings of 4.3 out of five stars based on 435 opinions on Facebook (where the center can manage its own page), 4.1 stars based on 164 reviews on Google, and 4.5 stars based on nine reviews on Yelp (plus two "not recommended" reviews, for one star and five stars). And on YellowPages.com, the center has a one-star rating and two five-star ratings.[1] [2] [3] [4]

The reviewers frequently praise the center's doctors and other staff, noting that they take time and care with clients. Numerous reviews compare the VA very favorably to other VA facilities, as well as to hospitals in the private sector. "Some may complain about the VA, but over all CGVAMC is a great place had great Doctor's, Primary Care is awesome and they have the best Mental Health Care in the SouthEast!!!" Doug wrote in a representative review on Yelp.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Of the two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date, one would recommend the facility and one would not. Both reviewers gave the center excellent five-star ratings for its family participation and four stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders. They disagreed on the center's counseling options, which received a two-star and a four-star rating. "If you are a vetetran it is a great rehab. Good docs and counslers," one of the reviewers wrote anonymously, in the only substantive piece of accompanying commentary.

FINANCING

As with all VA facilities, some treatments are provided free of charge to veterans, while others require a co-pay which may be covered by private insurance or federal military insurance, such as TRICARE. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's affordability gave it a three-star rating and two five-star ratings.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/AshevilleVAMC/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[2] GoogleReviews
[3] https://www.yelp.com/biz/va-medical-center-asheville?osq=VA
[4] https://www.yellowpages.com/asheville-nc/mip/asheville-va-medical-center-u-s-department-of-veterans-affairs-474265264?lid=474265264
