Services & Treatment

Editorial Review

ABOUT PARALLELS

Parallels is a private mental health and substance abuse treatment center in Lincoln, Neb. The center offers standard outpatient services (OP) for addiction and co-occurring disorders for both adolescents and adults. In addition, it offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults which, in the state of Nebraska, places it among 38.2 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that provide IOPs. The facility further assists those involved with the criminal justice system.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

As noted on its website, the facility’s outpatient substance abuse programs are “best suited for clients who are medically stable, have transportation, and live a reasonable distance from our facility.” Before beginning treatment at Parallels, clients undergo a comprehensive mental health and/or substance assessment to determine the best course of treatment based on their needs. Staff then work with each client to develop a plan with achievable goals.

Treatment at this facility involves individual and group counseling, primarily based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Staff also are trained in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and trauma-based interventions. According to the facility’s Facebook page, treatment is designed to improve decision making and coping skills. [1]

A staff member surveyed by Rehabs.com indicated the facility does not rely on 12-step or faith-based treatment models. According to a brochure published in 2016, the facility also offers anger prevention/management and adult and adolescent substance use education programs. [2] Parallels is among the 21.6 percent of facilities in Nebraska to provide specialized programming for criminal justice clients.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The clinical director of Parallels is a Ph.D. psychologist who is a licensed alcohol drug abuse counselor and author of several books on substance abuse treatment. Additional staff includes master’s level counselors and licensed alcohol and drug counselors.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni to date. On secondary sites, Parallels received a perfect five-star review from one reviewer on Google. “Dr. Herdman is amazing. He helped me to overcome my anger issues and taught me anger prevention strategies that were so valuable when I lost my job and became homeless for almost a year,” alum John wrote.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The one staff member polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing submitted moderately favorable feedback overall, offering a three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness. However, the reviewer awarded the top five stars to a range of other variables, including affordability, facility cleanliness and upkeep, family participation, staff experience and training, and treatment of co-occurring disorders.

Yet, when asked to rate how likely the staffer would be to recommend the treatment facility to family and friends, they answered with only two out of five stars. In addition, the number of counseling options available to clients was rated a mediocre three stars. In all, this staff member described to Rehabs.com the services provided to clients as: “Decent treatment in a great center.”

FINANCING

According to its website, the facility accepts private insurance as well as Medicaid and Medicare. Parallels also offers six-month payment plans to help clients cover the cost of treatment.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/parallelscounseling/about/?ref=page_internal

[2] http://www.slideshare.net/SarahWorley2/parallels-brochure-2016

[3] GoogleReviews

[4] https://www.facebook.com/pg/parallelscounseling/about/?ref=page_internal
