Editorial Review

ABOUT COMMUNITY PROGRAMS, INC. — WOMEN’S RESIDENTIAL

Community Programs, Inc. (CPI) operates two residential facilities — one for men and one for women — for individuals struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in the area of the Waterford Township, northwest of Detroit, Mich. This particular facility offers residential treatment for women, specializing in addiction treatment, detoxification, and relapse prevention. CPI, which is a sister company to local provider Meridian Health Services, also works extensively with individuals involved in the criminal justice system.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The admission process consists of a comprehensive screening and assessment, including a full medical and social history and a psychiatric examination, if necessary. It is one of only nine percent of Michigan outpatient facilities to offer detoxification to clients. The length of treatment varies according to the individual client’s needs.

Treatment follows a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) model. Women there participate in individual and group counseling, educational sessions and lectures, and have recreational time, including games, outdoor activities and television. The center’s gender-responsive services include sessions on processing emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, developing parenting skills, and gaining a sense of self-worth.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

All treatment is handled by female staff including a clinical manager, supervisor, and residential and outpatient counselors. The treatment team is made up of master’s level therapists, certified alcohol and drug counselors, and social workers. Community Programs, Inc. is licensed by the State of Michigan and is one of 260 (about 54 percent) of Michican facilities to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Reviewers polled by Rehabs.com at time of writing were more mixed when considering the staff's level of training and experience. The two loved ones polled on the metric both gave three out of five stars, indicating lukewarm feelings towards the staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility can reportedly house up to 37 women at that time, according to an article published in The Oakland Press in January 2015. Little other information is available about the facility, aside from the fact that no one can enter the building from the outside without checking in with program staff, and the exterior doors are locked after hours.

Phone privileges are earned, and family visits can be scheduled 48 hours in advance. Clients may not bring in any books, magazines, or other reading material unless it is 12-step based or religious. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center one star and three stars for its cleanliness, indicating a general dissatisfaction with the facility upkeep.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews directly from alumni of this facility. At the time of this writing, **secondary sites yielded mostly negative feedback.

On Citehealth, two reviewers both offered one and three star ratings respectively, with one writing that the accommodations were bad (dirty), and the other remarking about the staff’s incompetence.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones who rated Rehabs.com to date gave polarized reviews. Both reviewers complained about a lack of family participation: “Not enough family participation,” Karen wrote in a representative review. On the upside, Karen gave the center five stars for its effectiveness, and wrote: “Individual treatment is a strength... Family member remains clean and sober.”

Both reviewers also gave the facility median ratings of three stars for counseling options and a low rating of two stars for its exercise and leisure offerings.

WHAT STAFF SAY

To date, no staff have submitted reviews to Rehabs.com.

Secondary sites yielded mostly negative feedback for this facility. with a 1.8-star average rating based on eight reviews on Glassdoor.[2] One staff member complained that employees are encouraged to belittle clients, writing, “Counselors are instructed to belittle clients which is ethically wrong and counterintuitive to any training you would ever get elsewhere.”

On Indeed.com, 11 staff members offered 3.2 stars, however, it should be noted that these reviews apply to the organization as a whole, rather than the women’s residential facility in particular.[3]

FINANCING

CPI does not accept insurance. The sole individual polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center’s affordability gave it just one out of five stars.

[1] CitehealthReviews
[2] GlassdoorReviews
[3] Indeed.comReviews
