ABOUT CORE CENTER OF RECOVERY

Center of Recovery (CORE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving people struggling with a gambling addiction. Located in downtown Shreveport, LA, and operated by the Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling, CORE offers residential treatment, an intensive outpatient program (IOP), and continuing care for adult men and women. It is among the 29 percent of residential facilities in Louisiana.

Neither primary substance use care nor detox services are available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Prior to admission, all prospective clients begin with a thorough intake assessment, either in person or over the phone, to determine the best plan of action. As noted above, CORE offers both residential and outpatient treatment. It is among the 40 percent of Louisiana facilities to treat gambling addiction.

A typical day at CORE involves process groups, goals groups, and Gambling Anonymous meetings. Clients can expect to take part in daily group therapy sessions with some individual therapy. Education on money management and recovery literature (“Red and Blue Book”) is another compulsory part of treatment. Although unstructured personal time is limited, time is built into the weekend schedule for in-house community service and for movie viewings. On average, residential treatment lasts four weeks.

IOP participants meet four times weekly and loved ones are encouraged to attend each Friday for the course of the six-month program. CORE can refer clients struggling with other addictions - including nicotine, sex, and food - as the facility lacks daily medical staff and detoxification licensing.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

CORE’s treatment team is led by an executive director who oversees certified addiction counselors. Staff includes PhD and masters-level certified counselors. It is partially funded by the state of Louisiana, one of 21 facilities to receive state funding.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Surrounded by a garden and yard, CORE is situated in a home-like residence that can host as many as 21 men and women (the facility tends to have a split ratio of men and women at a time). Most residents share bedrooms with one to three other clients, although there is one private room available for clients with handicaps. Clients also have access to washers and dryers.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

M.G.C., the sole alum polled by Rehabs.com to date, called CORE a “house of miracles” and credited the program with saving their life.

On Facebook, where the facility can manage its reviews, 16 individuals shared a great deal of praise and an excellent average rating of 4.9 out of five stars. “CORE was a lifesaver. The counselors and administrator were so caring, compassionate and knowledgeable!” wrote alum Tami a representative review.[1]

Despite rating the facility four out of five stars, alum Trudy raised concern over the continuing care provided by CORE. "I have been very shocked that no one from core has called to check on my recovery process since leaving,” she wrote.

CORE also has a pair of five-star reviews on Google, one of whom called her 28-day stay “the greatest gift” she’s ever received. “Trust me,” she avowed, “If you’re tired living the life of a gambler, this is the place to heal."[2]

FINANCING

CORE does not accept insurance or offer financial assistance. The facility’s website notes that they will provide an invoice to file with insurance companies at the end of treatment. Out-of-state residents are charged $5,000 for 28 days of treatment, however, there is no treatment cost listed for Louisiana residents.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/centerofrecovery/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[2] GoogleReviews
