Editorial Review

ABOUT BLESSING HOSPITAL BEHAVIORAL CENTER

Set near the banks of the Mississippi River in Quincy, Ill., Blessing Hospital Behavioral Center provides both inpatient and outpatient treatment for adults, adolescents, and children. The medical center includes three inpatient units and two levels of treatment programming to serve clients who are struggling with mental health and co-occurring addiction disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Intake for new clients is 24/7, and clients work with admissions staff to enter treatment. Inpatient treatment is offered through behavioral medicine, adult psychiatric, and child and adolescent services units. A typical plan includes a mix of individual and group therapy as well as educational sessions. Adolescent care also involves pet and music therapy. Outpatient programs address mental health and chemical dependency concerns, which require less intensive care.

After completing a treatment program, clients work with therapists to create an aftercare plan. Clients are also connected to recovery groups in the local community and on-site at the medical center.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Blessing Hospital employs about seven psychiatrists, three board-certified for children and adolescents and four for adults. The staff also includes seven full-time therapists, a contracted teacher, and a 24/7 clinical staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Inpatient clients can expect a clinical, hospital-like setting during their stay in Blessing Hospital’s relatively new behavioral and psychiatric wing. Completed in 2015, Moorman Pavilion houses an 18-bed, secure adult psychiatric unit; a 10-bed behavioral medicine unit; and an 18-bed, secure child and adolescent unit. Single and shared rooms are available.

Meals prepared by the cafeteria staff are eaten in a Behavioral Center communal dining area. Group meeting areas and bedrooms are furnished in a simple, clean style. An outdoor recreation area includes equipment for basketball.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Two anonymous alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Blessing Hospital mixed to low ratings. The alumni gave generally low ratings for the facility's treatment effectiveness, counseling options, and the staff's level of training and experience, with ratings seldom reaching three out of five stars.

One alum felt that, despite the "nice and helpful" day staff, the facility did not offer an adequate amount of counseling, and wrote, "Have a counselor there 24/7 to help people. Not a hour a day to deal with everyone." The other alum, who gave lower ratings to most categories, conceded that the facility "got the job done but barely," and felt that that the facility allowed, "too much misconduct with some of the more aggressive patients making it an unpleasant environment."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The one friend or family member polled by Rehabs.com at time of writing gave mixed ratings and lackluster commentary regarding Blessing Hospital. Despite rating the hospital four out of five stars for its meals, affordability, and admissions and discharge procedures, this loved one “wasn’t really impressed” and wrote that there was “no real plan to the treatment.” The reviewer also reported that clients were left alone in their rooms for too long.

On Google, Blessing Hospital received two reviews, one giving five stars while the other gave only two stars.[1] The perfect five-star reviewer wrote: "I adopted three children from the state and have been with Blessing Behavioral Center for 10 + years. The staff is very friendly and professional. They really listen and work with the patient to provide top notch care. Excellent service!"

FINANCING

Blessing Hospital accepts Medicare, Illinois and Missouri Medicaid, and many private insurance plans. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

[1] https://goo.gl/LSUH5j
