ABOUT TEEN CHALLENGE: PENSACOLA MEN'S CENTER

Teen Challenge is an international network of faith-based rehabilitation programs founded by the Reverend David Wilkerson in New York in 1958. In Pensacola, the organization offers a men's center that provides treatment for men aged 18+ who are struggling with alcoholism, drug addiction, and other life-controlling issues. Treatment consists of a long-term, residential, Christian discipleship and rehabilitation program.

Other Teen Challenge centers in Florida include Teen Challenge of Southwest Florida and Teen Challenge: Tallahassee Men's Center.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Induction begins with a phone interview. If the client is accepted, they are then put on the list for a bed. All clients must have completed a physical exam before treatment.

The program lasts a year, in which time clients will have time to complete the mandatory induction and training sections of treatment. There's also an optional "Re-Entry and Emerging Leaders" internship, which clients may complete after they've graduated from the core program.

Treatment consists of five major components. First is discipleship, including internships, helping with chapel services, and community outreach. Second, the facility provides development opportunities in a variety of vocational fields: food management, customer service, landscaping, and maintenance. The final three elements consist of group and personal educational sessions on topics such as character development and time management, group and personal mentoring, and finally, a student leadership program, under which more senior participants act as mentors to more junior ones.

In addition, Teen Challenge Pensacola operates a print shop and several thrift stores, which provide extra vocational activities as well as offsetting the cost of treatment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff, however, the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Teen Challenge: Pensacola Men's Center two out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Families are welcome to visit on family day, but they must first be approved by Teen Challenge staff. In addition, once they have earned sufficient trust, residents may be given passes for off-campus visits. There are strict rules placed on communication with friends and family outside of the facility: for instance, mail must comply with the facility's standards, and all phone calls are monitored. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Teen Challenge: Pensacola Men's Center three stars for its cleanliness, accommodations, meals and nutrition, and exercise and leisure offerings.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would not recommend Teen Challenge: Pensacola Men's Center. "Had poor holistic offerings," the reviewer wrote, adding that treatment was not effective and giving the facility three stars for its family participation and counseling options and two stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders.

Teen Challenge: Pensacola Men's Center had a 3.9-star average rating based on seven reviews on Google at the time of this writing.[1] "This place provided the real help my son needed to recover and heal. My son says, he will always be healing but he Pensacola teen challenge gave him great amounts of encouragement, the skills he needed to face himself and take on life's responsibilities as a man, and saved his life," M.S. wrote in the only piece of substantive positive commentary. The negative reviews were varied; one accused a staff member of inaccurate knowledge of scripture and an insufficient commitment to Jesus; the other, W.M., accused the center of "corruption" and of being a "wicked and evil place."

CONCLUSION

There's an induction fee of $1,350, followed by monthly tuition of $1,050. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility three out of five stars for its affordability.

In January 2014, the Teen Challenge Pensacola Men's Center was cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for "25 safety and health violations following an inspection of the company's facilities in Pensacola. OSHA initiated the July 2013 inspection after receiving a complaint alleging safety and health hazards. Proposed penalties total $228,600." The notice of citation continued: "'This employer willfully disregarded worker safety by exposing workers to amputation hazards,' said Brian Sturtecky, OSHA's area director in Jacksonville, Fla. 'The hazards found during our inspection must be eliminated from this workplace immediately'" The hazards in question appear to have been found in a woodworking shop or similar, though Rehabs.com was not able to find any updates on the case at the time of this writing.

[1] https://goo.gl/P1E8y6
