ABOUT N STREET VILLAGE- A COMMUNITY OF EMPOWERMENT AND RECOVERY FOR WOMEN

Serving nearly 2,000 homeless and low-income women annually, N Street Village is one of the largest providers of housing and treatment services in the D.C. metro area. The established and reputable nonprofit organization runs a variety of supportive programs dedicated to helping women acquire and maintain stability in their housing, mental and physical health, employment, and substance abuse recovery. N Street Village operates one of only 34 treatment facilities in Washington DC.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Programming at N Street Village targets four main areas of need: housing, meals and other basic needs, health, and employment. There are six separate permanent and recovery housing units that collectively make up “the village.” Some of these programs benefit women with a supportive, social environment as they address the root of their mental health and substance abuse.

Others, like Miriam’s House and Erna’s House, are designed for formerly homeless women with HIV/AIDS and for women with histories of chronic homelessness, respectively. Finally, the Patricia Handy Place for Women offers short-term, emergency relief for women in need of an immediate place to stay.

Considered by the organization an “entry point” into its other programs, the Women’s Day Center is open 365 days per year to provide women with food, clothing, laundry and showers, access to health and legal services, and crisis and case management. Welcome sessions are held weekdays at 9:15 a.m., where women have opportunity to learn more about the organization’s many services.

N Street Village’s Wellness Center takes a holistic approach to women’s physical and mental well-being. Through its partnership with Unity Health Care, the organization offers women primary health and dental care at its on-site clinics. Support groups take place regularly for women dealing with HIV/AIDs, trauma, and addiction, and daily classes include yoga, aerobics, and smoking cessation. Weekly one-on-one psychiatric counseling is also available, and survey data compiled by Rehabs.com indicated that 12-Step involvement may be including in substance abuse treatment.

Finally, N Street Village paves the way towards employment opportunities through its peer mentorship and peer leadership programs, volunteer-led computer classes, and referrals to other needed resources.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Members of the senior team include program directors and other human resources and administrative efforts. Trained staff and volunteers also play a key role in shaping the rehabilitative process.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The organization can accommodate over 100 women at a time, collectively, through its various supportive housing units. Residents live in either shared apartments and partake in social, leisure, and therapeutic activities when not in therapy. There is also a 51-bed affordable housing unit (Eden House) for low-to-moderate income persons and families.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, the anonymous alum polled by Rehabs.com awarded the organization four of five stars for over a dozen different areas, such as its 12-step programming, counseling options, family participation, and the level of staff experience and training. Describing staff as understanding and patient, the anonymous alum wrote: “Came away hopeful and full of life.”

Reviews on secondary sites are mostly positive. On Google reviews, out of five stars, three reviewers gave five-, four-, and one star-ratings, respectively. “One of the most efficient and effective providers of wraparound services for low income and homeless women in the Greater DC Metro area,” reviewer Julian wrote.[1] On North Street Village's Facebook page, which it may have the ability to control, 32 reviewers gave an average rating of 4.7 out of five stars.[2]

FINANCING

N Street Village relies on funding support from organizations, businesses, and contributions as well as government contracts to make its programs available to low income women.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2]https://www.facebook.com/NStreetVillage/
