Editorial Review

ABOUT HARTFORD HOSPITAL'S INSTITUTE OF LIVING (IOL)

Founded in 1822, the Institute of Living (IOL) is a mental health treatment facility located in Hartford, Conn. Now a division of Hartford Hospital, IOL offers a wide range of behavioral, psychiatric, and addiction treatment services for children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly.

Treatment options include inpatient, residential, outpatient, intensive outpatient (IOP), and partial hospitalization (PHP)/day treatment programs. IOL is among the 86.2 percent of treatment facilities in Connecticut that is operated by a nonprofit organization.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility's website, IOL's best practices are based on clinical research, evidence-based outcome studies, advances in psychopharmacology, and input from former clients. IOL uses a broad range of treatment modalities across its many programs. These include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy, group therapy, and medication management, among many others. The Medication Assisted Treatment Close to Home (MATCH™) program uses Suboxone and therapy to help people in recovery from opioid dependency.

IOL operates two residential treatment facilities. At Eli’s Retreat, which offers short- and long-term stays (up to six months), staff administer medications and clients have the opportunity for routine social and recreational outings. The Todd House, which is funded by grants, also offers residential treatment for mental health and substance misuse disorders on the main hospital campus.

There are numerous outpatient and IOP programs, many of which offer specific tracks for children and adolescents, adults, and the elderly as well as for those struggling with anxiety, eating disorders, and depression. The facility also offers treatment for mood disorders in women who are pregnant or who have recently given birth and offers specialized tracks for those struggling with schizophrenia.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center's website indicates that the treatment team includes clinicians, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and nurses. IOL is among the 35.7 percent of treatment facilities in Connecticut to be accredited by the Joint Commission and among the 28.6 percent to be certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

ACCOMMODATIONS AND AMENITIES

The facility's website indicates that programming is hosted in several buildings throughout the 35-acre, landscaped campus, which is planted with many rare and unusually large tree species. Eli’s Retreat is a 13-bed facility.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from alumni. However, the 37 people who left reviews on Google at the time of this writing provided an average rating of 2.6 out of five stars.[1] Positive reviews tended to praise the training and care provided by staff. "Best mental health that I've ever had. The staff is very attentive," wrote Diane in a representative positive review.

Most reviews, however, were negative. Criticism tended to contradict positive feedback; many reviewers characterized the staff as uncaring and the treatment as ineffective. Several complained of not getting enough therapy.

Additionally, on Facebook, where staff can manage reviews, Hartford HealthCare received an average three out of five stars based on 72 ratings.[2] However, reviews were not specific to IOL.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com to date provided mostly positive feedback. The anonymous reviewer gave four or five out of five stars to most metrics evaluated, including treatment effectiveness, ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and counseling options. However, they also gave only two- or three-star ratings to many other metrics such as exercise and leisure options, holistic offerings, and family participation. "Good treatment. To prison like. My friend was an addict. Now he is not," they wrote.

FINANCE

According to the treatment center's website, Hartford Hospital’s IOL program takes private insurance as well as Medicare, out-of-state Medicaid, and other state assistance.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/HartfordHealthCare/reviews/?ref=page_internal
