ABOUT MILLS-PENINSULA HEALTH SERVICES

Mills-Peninsula, a division of the Northern California-based Sutter Health Network, offers a continuum of services for those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction or co-occurring disorders. Programming for adults is offered out of the hospital’s San Mateo location, and includes inpatient treatment and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). The facility is also one of only 28 hospital-based substance abuse treatment facilities in California (just two percent of all hospital-based facilities) to provide medically managed detox.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Those in need of assisted detox can expect the process to take three to five days. From there, clients may opt for inpatient treatment, which is designed to stabilize individuals while engaging them in 45 hours of structured activity per week.

Program components include individual therapy, family counseling, group therapy, family education, stress management and assertiveness training, and relapse prevention, as well as on-site recovery meetings and 12-step work.

Clients who graduate from inpatient care may enroll in Mills-Peninsula’s 12-week IOP, an outpatient modality available in 39 percent of California substance abuse treatment facilities. This phase focuses on building addiction recovery skills while allowing clients to maintain their professional and personal lives.

Mills-Peninsula also offers programming for clients battling painkiller addiction, as well as teens ages 13 to 18. In 2017, only 21 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in California provided services tailored to adolescents. A weekly aftercare group for clients and loved ones is provided up to a year for no charge.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Mills-Peninsula’s staff is multidisciplinary and comprised of physicians trained in addiction medicine, chemical dependency therapists, nurses, chemical dependency counselors, and occupational/recreational therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Detox and inpatient clients stay in the confidential unit of Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, which is located on the San Mateo campus in downtown San Mateo. The one alum surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility just one of out five stars for its cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single anonymous alum polled by Rehabs.com to date was somewhat critical of Mills-Peninsula, rating the facility two out of five stars for its level of staff support and noting that the program was too short and lacked appropriate aftercare. However, they also awarded the rehab four out of five stars for its connectivity/visitor policy, and conceded that the facility was “extremely well equipped” and took extra measures to protect patients’ privacy. They also described the staff as “caring” and added: “Overall I thought it was helpful.”

Feedback for Mills-Peninsula Medical Center as a whole was mixed on secondary sites.
