Editorial Review

ABOUT TEEN CHALLENGE: ASBURY FAMILY CENTER

Teen Challenge is an international network of faith-based rehabilitation programs founded by the Reverend David Wilkerson in New York in 1958. The Asbury Family Center is unusual both in the Teen Challenge network and among treatment facilities more broadly: the center provides an apartment complex where husbands and wives can live together with their children while working toward recovery on a long-term, faith-based program. The center is located on a residential street northwest of central San Jose; nearby Teen Challenge facilities include Teen Challenge San Jose and Sacramento Valley Teen Challenge.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All prospective clients must complete a physical exam.

Like all Teen Challenge centers, the Asbury Family Program offers a 12-month program that's primarily based on Bible study and discipleship, in addition to assignments, individual and group counseling, and educational and
vocational assistance.

The program is divided into four phases of three months each. In order to advance to the next level, each client must show that they have progressed sufficiently. Students also gain privileges and responsibilities as they advance through treatments: for example, in the final phase, they must act as leaders to the newer members of the program, as well as making plans for employment or studies and a place to live. The program prizes the qualities of self-discipline, trustworthiness, honesty, cooperation, and responsibility.

Clients are encouraged to participate in a three-to-six-month internship at the Asbury Family Program after completing treatment. This recommendation serves as a form of aftercare for clients, in addition to allowing them to give back to the facility.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The program is run by a husband-and-wife team who are themselves five-year graduates of the Asbury Family Program.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There are 13 apartments in the complex. Though children are welcome to stay with their parents for most of treatment, there is a period of 30โ€“120 days during which arrangements must be made for them to live elsewhere. In addition, married men and women stay in separate centers for at least the first four months of treatment, and following this initial period their living together is subject to staff approval.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date indicated that treatment at the Asbury Family Center had benefited their loved one, helping them to stop abusing their drug of choice and to improve their attitude and self-awareness. However, they added: "My personal experience has been limited due to living states away."

At the time of this writing, the facility had a three-star, a four-star, and a five-star rating spread between Google and Facebook.[1] [2] "What a great little housing complex for families, all centered around sobriety and the love of Jesus," D.L. wrote on Facebook, in the only piece of commentary pertaining to the center's treatment offerings.

FINANCING

There's a $500 processing fee, following which clients must pay $2,450 per month in tuition fees as well as a $200 monthly fee per child living with them. Teen Challenge offers a limited amount of scholarship funding, but encourages prospective clients to first try all other avenues of funding available to them.

[1] https://goo.gl/KXWskp
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Teen-Challenge-Family-Center/125806594139873
