Editorial Review

ABOUT COMMUNITY BRIDGES, INC. - MESA

Founded in 1982, Community Bridges, Inc. operates 29 medically-integrated behavioral health facilities throughout Arizona. Committed to provide addiction treatment regardless of a person’s ability to pay, the non-profit organization provides a full continuum of treatment services for adults struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. The Mesa facility, 20 miles east of Phoenix, offers comprehensive outpatient treatment services, including medication-assisted, outpatient-based detoxification.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients participate in an initial substance abuse and psychiatric evaluation to assist clinicians who form an individualized treatment plan. If ambulatory detoxification is necessary, clients may undergo medication-assisted treatment (Suboxone) to help alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Medication management may continue to play a role in treatment to also help minimize cravings during the outpatient program.

With an emphasis on peer-assisted sessions, Community Bridges, Inc.’s treatment program utilizes evidence-based methods, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to address destructive thinking and behavior patterns. Clients participate in a regular schedule of group and individual therapy sessions facilitated by licensed counselors and peer support specialist experienced in the process of recovery. If applicable, family therapy is also encouraged.

Ongoing medication management and psychiatric evaluations are offered to clients with co-occurring disorders. The Mesa facility may also hold disorder-specific counseling sessions and educational classes for clients struggling with co-occurring mental health concerns.

Upon program completion, case managers and peer specialists assist clients with aftercare planning, helping to ensure clients receive necessary support after treatment. Discharge services may include referrals to community-based programs and transitional housing, including shelters and scattered site housing.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Community Bridges of Mesa is CARF-accredited and employs a team of licensed physicians, program administrators, medical support staff, and master’s-level substance abuse counselors. In addition, the program employs around 300 peer support specialists throughout its network, who are individuals in recovery who assist in sessions.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing offered mixed opinions of the outpatient facility. Two survey respondents generally approved of the facility. Out of five stars, the satisfied alumni provided four-star ratings for the facility’s counseling options and its ability to treat co-occurring disorders. These two alumni also gave perfect five-star ratings for the treatment staff’s level of experience and training. “Employees were great,” one anonymous alum wrote, while the other alum described the staff as “Caring, understanding, compationate.”

The third alum offered one-star ratings for the facility’s counseling options and for the likelihood they’d recommend the facility to others. “Some of the people working there were absolutely wonderful, really cared and were great at their jobs,” alum L.L. wrote. However, they reported that privacy was an issue and felt that the building could use significant upgrades.

Reviews elsewhere online at the time of this writing are just as mixed with some polarizing reviews. Nineteen Yelp reviewers ratings averaged 2.21 out of five stars.[1] "Went for detox in may 2016, the staff was very helpful, courteous, and made sure I had everything I needed," wrote Matt. On the other hand, Ann said, "They have tunnel vision as to help they can provide, sound burned-out and cynical. I left feeling I had wasted two days and just didn't fit into their program and it was all about program census, rather than helping."

In a more representational review, Michelle wrote: "community bridges, like all medical treatment centers has both competent and incompetent
staff... I believe that the staff for the most part mirror the patients when it comes to the way they treat them."

Additionally, there are two ratings on CiteHealth for this facility to date, both for one out of five stars.[2] The commenters had nothing positive to say and noted that they did not receive adequate help.

WHAT STAFF SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive employee feedback to date, secondary sources revealed generally positive employee feedback. On Indeed, nine reviewers gave the facility an average rating of 3.5 out of five stars for the Mesa facility.[3] Many reviewers tended to cite co-workers as a facility strength. “I had the opportunity to meet a lot of fantastic people, not just patients but coworkers,” one representative reviewer wrote.

Several reviewers across two secondary sites revealed conflict with management. An anonymous Glassdoor reviewer noted that "Oftentimes department management is disrespectful towards staff in front of peers."[4] To date, there are 45 ratings on Glassdoor for the network as a whole that averaged 2.7 out of five stars.

FINANCING

While the organization accepts a range of private insurance plans, Community Bridges, Inc. offers treatment free-of-charge to the homeless, indigent, and other clients who are eligible for Medicaid.

[1] https://www.yelp.com/biz/community-bridges-east-valley-mesa-2
[2] http://citehealth.com/rehab-centers/arizona/cities/mesa/community-bridges-inc#reviews
[3] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Community-Bridges/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Mesa%2C+AZ
[4] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Community-Bridges-Reviews-E142671.htm
