What reviewers said

Reviewers frequently mentioned that the facility saved their lives and provided valuable life skills, individualized treatment, and supportive counseling. However, others criticized the accommodations as dirty and lacking privacy, and described the staff as untrained, disrespectful, and unsupportive. Some reviewers also reported unexpected and high billing costs, a lack of licensed counselors, and a program structure that felt more like a halfway house than a treatment center.

ABOUT CANYON VISTA RECOVERY CENTER

Located in the residential Phoenix suburb of Mesa, Ariz., the nonprofit Canyon Vista Recovery Center (formerly Women in New Recovery) offers long-term residential care, transitional programming, and sober-living facilities for adult women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Medical detox is not available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment programs generally last between two and 11 months. A typical day begins with an off-site 12-step meeting, followed by therapy and process groups on topics including trauma, self-esteem, and grief. Afternoon programming consists of physical or holistic activities, such as yoga, dance, working out at the gym, neurofeedback therapy, or drum circle. Evening programming ends with another 12-step meeting and house-facilitated meeting.

Treatment also includes individual therapy, a weekly family healing group, relapse prevention training, and life-skills work, including nutrition planning and budgeting. The sole alum polled on the amount of group counseling offered at
Canyon Vista Recovery Center indicated that they attended group therapy four times per day. They also indicated that they received adequate medical care while in treatment.

Treatment also includes advanced therapies such as vibroacoustic therapy, alpha-stim treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and others.

Upon completion, all clients are connected to an alumni support network. The facility’s website states that an alum who relapses in her first year after treatment may re-enter the program free of charge for one month.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The staff at Canyon Vista includes a licensed independent substance abuse counselor, two behavioral health technicians, a grief recovery specialist, a naturopathic medical doctor, a master’s level group facilitator, and a yoga instructor. Many staff members are themselves in recovery. The three individuals polled on the staff's level of training and experience provided mixed feedback, offering a one-, a three-, and a maximum five-star rating.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Clients live in seven homes located on the facility’s campus. There are laundry facilities, a garden, and outdoor lounges on-site. A gym with a pool is nearby. A therapy dog also lives at the facility.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mixed reviews. Alum J.W. provided only two out of five stars for exercise and leisure provisions, holistic treatment options, and the efficacy of treatment for co-occurring disorders. They also provided two out of five stars when asked if they would recommend the facility, and wrote "Too many clients in too little space. Very overpriced for the facility not actually providing any treatment."

As for strengths, however, J.W. did rate the treatment effectiveness, connectivity/visitor policy, and quality of family programming four out of five stars.

Alum D.K. felt very positively about the facility. They gave maximum five-star ratings for the respect shown toward clients, the staff's level of training, the connectivity/visitor policy, the level of staff support, and the quality of holistic treatment options. "This program saved my life," D.K. wrote, "I began to think I would never get better. I never knew the type of life I could have until I got better here." D.K. also indicated that marketing materials were accurately reflective of the treatment they received while at Canyon Vista Recovery Center.

Reviews on third-party sites were similarly mixed, with an average 3.3 out of five stars from nine Google reviews at the time of this writing. [1] Positive reviewers praised the educational treatment that bettered their behaviors, although negative reviews accused the facility of being money-oriented. One anonymous reviewer gave the facility one out of five stars in most categories, including staff's level of training and experience, and accommodations and amenities. "Lack of caring, a scam to get people's money," the anonymous loved one wrote, "nothing offered to handle depression, co occuring addictions... please don't use this place."

The other loved one however, whole heartedly recommended the facility. "This facility is a life experience to attend to. It fixes you, and leads you on the right path," the reviewer wrote.
