ABOUT TRANSITIONAL LIVING COMMUNITIES

In operation in Mesa, Ariz. since 1992, Transitional Living Communities (TLC) is one of Arizona’s 73 long-term treatment facilities. It offers long-term residential treatment, a halfway house program, and outpatient (OP) programs for adults seeking treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The treatment process at Transitional Living Communities begins with a medical and behavioral health assessment. This assessment determines if clients are able to seek treatment in a transitional facility. Clients with an immediate need for detox can be enrolled in the program under the care of trained physicians and nurses.

Through a rigorous schedule of evidence-based treatments, including weekly one-on-one therapy and daily group sessions, clients address the emotional, mental, and social issues of addiction and recovery. Topics include anger management, stress, aftercare planning, and relapse prevention. Evidence-based modalities include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), client-centered therapy, reality therapy, and brief therapy.

Clients also participate in gender-specific addiction education. This is relatively common in treatment as nearly half of treatment facilities have gender-specific programming. The facility also provides family counseling when appropriate to help prepare families to be a stronger support network after treatment.

Off-site 12-Step meetings are encouraged as a way to promote continued growth and development using community-based sources. The 12-Step fellowship used in 47.7% of U.S. treatment facilities. Clients also participate in holistic activities that include art and garden therapy, yoga sessions, hypnosis, and twice-monthly massage and esthetician services.

After completion of residential treatment, many clients choose to continue with flexible outpatient services, which include drug and alcohol screenings, individual and group counseling, and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Clients may also opt to live in one of TLC’s halfway houses. The facility has 800 beds in various locations throughout the area. The program has four phases of treatment and includes Big Book study, 12-step meetings, a relapse prevention class, drug screenings, and in-house peer counseling.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility is led by a medical director and includes licensed counselors. A team of administrative, management, and property coordination specialists are also on-hand to coordinate operations and services. One alum polled by Rehabs.com to date rated staff's level of experience and training three out of five stars. The facility is also a part of the 19% of U.S. facilities that are accredited by the Joint Commission.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The home-like residential treatment facility provides 40 beds for men in sober living apartments and a 20-bed home for women located two blocks away. Overall, Transitional Living Communities has over 800 beds in multiple facilities, placing it in the largest segment of treatment organizations in the country Clients share apartments and have access to everything that they need to live independently. A cook prepares three meals daily, as well as brunch and supper on weekends. On-site recreation opportunities include pool, ping-pong, and fitness club access. Off-site weekend activities, such as movies, bowling, and field trips selected by clients, are also offered.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave TLC mixed to positive reviews. The two alumni polled in extended treatment metrics gave polarized feedback, with one rating the facility mostly one out of five stars in exercise and leisure options, cleanliness, connectivity, and holistic treatment offerings. The other rated the facility four out of five stars in connectivity, family participation, and cleanliness, but also only gave one star for holistic treatment offerings.

In comments, two anonymous alumni praised the program's counseling offerings, although one wrote: "Could use more supervision," bu added, "Reasonable living arrangements."

On Google reviews, 17 individuals gave TLC an average rating of 3.4 out of five stars. [1] While some alumni were critical of the facility's physical upkeep, others praised the staff and felt the facility's programming was effective. A+," one representative reviewer wrote.

FINANCING

TLC accepts private insurance, self-pay, and employee assisted payments. The center offers financing plans to those who qualify. The halfway house program charges $120 per week for room and board, three daily meals, peer counseling, and employment assistance.

[1] GoogleReviews
