ABOUT AFFINITY HEALTH SYSTEM โ€“ MERCY MEDICAL CENTER

Mercy Medical Center, located in the eastern Wisconsin city of Oshkosh, is a full-service hospital with an inpatient behavioral health unit for adults. Treatment of substance abuse and chemical dependency is provided within that unit, which also serves patients struggling with eating disorders and an array of other mental health conditions. Crisis intervention, including detoxification support, is available. Also known as Ascension NE Wisconsin Mercy Hospital, this facility is part of a global health care organization which includes Affinity Health System.

In addition to dozens of outpatient clinics, Affinity operates St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton, with a residential behavioral health unit for adolescents, and Calumet Medical Center in Chilton. Affinity's Catholic mission prioritizes serving individuals with limited economic means to access health care.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The emergency room at Mercy Medical Center provides initial crisis intervention 24/7 on a walk-in basis. Individuals needing short-term, inpatient care are transferred to the behavioral health unit, where those struggling with a substance use disorder may begin medical detoxification. During the stabilization process, patients participate in some combination of individual and group therapy, occupational therapy, and ongoing assessment and evaluation, according to the Ascension NE Wisconsin website.

From the beginning of inpatient treatment, planning for discharge is a priority. Patients may transition from inpatient care to continuing outpatient therapy at one of the center's area clinics. Available services include intensive outpatient programming, adolescent and adult aftercare groups, and relapse prevention programming.

Ascension's approach to behavioral health care addresses the whole person, which means that along with medical staff, chaplains and other spiritual services staff members contribute on an interdisciplinary treatment team.

STAFF CREDENTIALS
.
According to the Ascension website, treatment at Mercy Medical Center is team-based. Members include psychiatrists, social workers, alcohol and drug counselors, recreation therapists, chaplains, nurses, and psychologists. The behavioral health unit also employs a registered dietitian. The center is accredited by the Wisconsin Alcoholism and Drug Counselor Certification Board.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

In total, the hospital has 157 patient beds, according to the Mercy Medical Center website. Private rooms are standard and the facility and grounds are tobacco-free.

The two former clients polled by Rehabs.com to date provided mixed feedback on accommodations. Both agreed that the hospital was clean and well-maintained and that meals and nutrition were high quality, awarding four and five out of five stars for these aspects. Exercise and leisure activities were less satisfactory, indicated by ratings of one and two stars. The two alumni offered contrasting perspectives on the facility's policies regarding communication outside the unit, such as use of phones and Internet.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

In general, the two alumni who provided feedback to Rehabs.com for Mercy Medical Center were critical. One common complaint was insufficient interaction with the unit's doctors. The alumni awarded moderate three-star ratings for the staff's level of training and experience, but a metric measuring the effectiveness of treatment received just one and two stars. One reviewer described the treatment as "slow" and concluded that it "didn't help." They also reported spending too much time alone or without any therapeutic or recreational activities.

The second reviewer represented opportunities for family participation in treatment and available options in counseling approaches to suit the patient's preferences favorably, with four and five stars respectively. Nevertheless, they concluded succinctly: "Good food. Bad doctors." Another concern shared was a lack of aftercare information, a service highlighted as a priority on the facility's website.

Google reviews for the general hospital also reflected mixed opinions, with an average rating of 3.1 out of five from 22 individuals. All 22 reviews were for the emergency room or billing services, with none referencing substance use or other behavioral health disorder treatment. Hospital alumni and friends and family tended to complain about wait times, praise the staff and quality of care received, or note a lack of compassion.[1]

FINANCING

The Ascension NE Wisconsin Mercy Medical Center website notes that, in addition to accepting insurance coverage, the hospital offers financing, extended payment plans, and financial assistance to eligible patients. A patient financial counselor is available to help clients navigate options.

[1] https://goo.gl/CD6JYK
