Editorial Review

ABOUT HOPE HAVEN NORTH BAY LODGE

Hope Haven, affiliated with Catholic Charities, has been providing substance abuse treatment in Wisconsin since 1973. The nonprofit organization operates two facilities in Madison: Chris Farley House and North Bay Lodge. Located near the shores of Lake Mendota, North Bay Lodge offers residential treatment for men and women age 18 years and over and is among 29 substance abuse treatment facilities in the state that provide short-term residential, non-hospital care.

Detox services are not available on-site, and clients must be medically stable prior to admission. Suboxone treatment for opiate withdrawal is permitted if the client is on a stable dose.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All clients receive an assessment upon admission to develop an individualized plan. Treatment is evidence-based and includes up to 25 hours of individual and group therapy per week. Additional modalities include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), trauma-informed care, and relapse prevention workshops. There also are weekly educational groups and family counseling sessions, as well as holistic and experiential activities including mindfulness practices, yoga, pet therapy, and art therapy.

A specialized family program called “Family Matters” is offered each week and focuses on the impact addiction has on the entire family system.

Clients typically stay in primary treatment for 21-30 days. They then generally move on to transitional treatment for 36-60 days while residing at North Bay Lodge or transferring to Chris Farley House as they look for work and housing. The center offers aftercare support by providing weekly Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There currently is no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff; however, the two alumni polled by Rehabs.com on the staff’s level of experience gave this aspect of the facility two four-star ratings, as well as a three out of five-star rating.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

North Bay Lodge can accommodate up to 26 clients in a large, family-style home. Images on the facility’s website show simple, dorm-style rooms (private rooms are available), airy and open common spaces with flat screen TVs, recreation room with pool table and computer lab, small exercise room, and communal dining room where clients are fed chef-prepared meals. Other amenities include an expansive, park-like outdoor space with walking paths, and on-site laundry.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three former clients polled by Rehabs.com Hope Haven at the time of the writing offered mixed feedback, skewed to the positive: two favorable, one negative. Alum R.J.D. gave two star ratings for the effectiveness of group and individual counseling and the facility's discharge planning, though offered a four-star rating for the amount of staff support. "The treatment catered exclusively to drug use and as an alcoholic, i did not get the specific attention and treatment that i was looking for," the alum wrote.

Alum Jessica gave a three-star rating for the facility's cleanliness and cautioned the facility is not for those looking for an upscale experience: “If you are willing to do the work, avoid drama/trouble from other clients, speak regularly with the counselors and take the opportunity to work on yourself, you can succeed.” She gave a perfect five-star rating for the likelihood she'd recommend the facility to others.

Offering a four-star rating for the level of family participation, alum, J, echoed that sentiment: “Treatment is only as successful as what you put in…I can easily say that Hope Haven saved my life.”

On secondary review sites, the facility received mixed though mostly positive reviews to date. Four reviewers gave the facility an average rating of 3.5 out of five stars on Google, and two reviewers both gave perfect five-star ratings on Facebook, which the organization can manage. [1] [2] Google reviews were as polarized as “This rehab is beyond amazing” to “This place is a mad house.”

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, the cost for primary residential treatment is $175 per day. Clients who remain for transitional living are charged $125 a day. Some insurance plans are accepted.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/HopeHavenHelps/reviews/?ref=page_internal
