ABOUT MERITER NEWSTART SUBSTANCE USE TREATMENT PROGRAM

A treatment program of UnityPoint Health-Meriter, a nonprofit community hospital based in Madison, Wis., the Meriter NewStart Substance Use Treatment Program (NewStart) treats adults and adolescents struggling with substance use issues primarily through its intensive outpatient (IOP) program and inpatient detox unit. Other services include aftercare, counseling services, educational groups, and medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction. It is among the 13 facilities in Wisconsin with a dedicated opioid treatment program.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon entering the Meriter NewStart Substance Use Treatment Program, clients undergo a medical assessment to determine the most appropriate level of care. Staff coordinate with each client’s primary care providers while referrals for physician care can also be arranged for. Where necessary, some clients enter treatment with a brief inpatient detox prior to beginning IOP.

Once in IOP, adults may choose to attend either morning or evening groups, both of which meet three hours at a time, four days a week. Most participants complete the program in four to six weeks and meet with a counselor for one-on-one sessions as needed.

Similar programming is available for teens aged 12 to 18, placing Meriter NewStart among the 20 percent of Wisconsin facilities with dedicated adolescent services. Treatment is designed to engage parents and address the needs of young adults. Teens enrolled in IOP meet twice a week, and counselors collaborate with families and other support systems to allow for the least amount of disruption as possible. NewStart may also recommend a one-on-one counseling approach instead of group therapy, when needed.

Clients who complete primary care have access to aftercare planning to support their medical, social, and emotional needs in transitioning back to everyday life. Medication management, family counseling, group therapy, and educational workshops are also all available.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes nurses, physician assistants, and counselors, as well as board-certified physicians who specialize in addiction. All counselors have master’s level degrees in their respective fields.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Three of the four alumni to have completed surveys with Rehabs.com as of this writing shared excellent feedback on their treatment experiences.

Alum Garrett gave NewStart five out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, its cleanliness, and the staff's level of training and experience, describing the treatment team as “caring and we'll trained.” He also gave the facility four out of five stars for its counseling options and noted: “They have different treatment plans for everyone depending on needs.”

The other two satisfied alumni, who provided feedback anonymously, reported overall positive experiences and gave four- and five-star ratings for the facility’s treatment effectiveness.

In the sole negative review, an anonymous individual gave the facility two out of five stars for its meals, exercise and leisure offerings, and counseling options. This alum complained about the lack of insurance coverage, the program’s high cost, and the lack of trained staff and extracurricular activities for adults.

On Google, where the program has a pair of five-star ratings to date, former client Pamela wrote: “This is hands down the best I've ever experienced! I've absolutely love this place. Highly recommended.”[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

In the sole Rehabs.com survey response from a loved one to date, an anonymous reviewer awarded the program four-star ratings for its treatment effectiveness, meals, and holistic options, yet added: “People were concerned and caring but the program didnt help my son.”

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, insurance coverage for clients with substance abuse disorders varies widely with each carrier. This being the case, NewStart suggests that prospective clients reach out to the facility to verify their coverage.

Payments can be made using cash, debit cards, credit cards, and personal checks. Medicare and Medicaid are both accepted. It is among the 60 percent of Wisconsin facilities to accept Medicare.

[1] GoogleReviews
