ABOUT ST. ELIZABETH HOSPITAL - BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Located in southeastern Appleton, near the north shore of Wisconsin's Lake Winnebago, St. Elizabeth Hospital is a full-service medical center that serves the residents of Fox Valley. Alongside an array of medical treatments, the facility offers inpatient and outpatient care for adults and adolescents struggling with a range of mental and behavioral health disorders, including substance use disorder.

The center is among the 5.5 percent of rehab programs in Wisconsin providing hospital-based inpatient care. It's also among just 19.8 percent of Wisconsin-based rehabs that offers some programming specifically for adolescents. St. Elizabeth Hospital is owned and operated by the world's largest Catholic healthcare system, Ascension.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, St. Elizabeth’s treats a wide range of mental health issues, including substance misuse and chemical dependency, depression, mood and anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, thought disorders, PTSD, and more. Treatment begins with assessments and evaluations, which are to establish an individualized treatment plan. For adolescents, there's a particular emphasis on prevention and early intervention.

Programs are evidence-based and multidisciplinary, and offer counseling in individual, group, and family settings. Outpatient options include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP).

St. Elizabeth's Hospital is also among the 22 percent of rehabs in Wisconsin that offer medication-assisted treatment using Suboxone, for those struggling with addiction to opioids.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team at St. Elizabeth’s includes psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, nurses, registered dietitians, and occupational therapists. The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility four out of five stars for the level of training found in its individual counselors.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

St. Elizabeth’s has 352 beds, though it's unclear how many of these are in the behavioral health unit. However, in October of 2018, the hospital opened a dedicated behavioral health unit for youth. The 14,000-square-foot unit is kid-friendly, features a sensory room, and can accommodate up to 17 clients. According to a local news outlet, the adult behavioral unit is also currently undergoing an upgrade. The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility two out of five stars for its cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date would not recommend the behavioral health department at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. "Counselor was cynical... there was never any kind of structure. We were allowed to leave early," D.L. wrote; they also indicated that the center's staff seemed unresponsive to their complaints, and that they did not receive any aftercare. However, they gave the facility five out of five stars for the overall quality of its individual counseling, and four out of five stars for the quality of its group counseling.

The behavioral health department has a single review on secondary sites at the time of this writing, and it's negative. In a one-star review on CiteHealth, an alum described inadequate treatment programming and clients being discharged before they were ready, as well as often-unhelpful staff.[1] "The hospital in general is jut worried about getting you in and out. When i was there 6 patients got released in 1 day and another 4 the next all of whom were not ready in any way shape or form to leave," the anonymous reviewer wrote.

Secondary sites don't yield any further coverage of the behavioral health department, though they do offer mixed feedback on the hospital as a whole, which has average ratings of 2.8 out of five stars based on 78 reviews on Google, 2.5 stars based on seven reviews on Yelp, 2.5 stars based on six reviews on YellowPages.com, and 4.2 stars based on 476 opinions on Facebook (where the facility can manage its own page).[2] [3] [4] [5]

The negative reviews invariably reported unhelpful, inattentive staff and long wait times: "Rude, unpleasant staff. Long long wait time for admit when they were expecting us," Kandice wrote in a typical comment on Google. However, several reviewers contradicted these complaints and praised the staff, particularly the nurses: "I found the nurses at St Es to be professional, passionate and personable. That made my stay at the hospital excellent," Ken wrote in a representative comment on Google.

FINANCING

St. Elizabeth’s accepts a wide range of private insurance plans. Financing and financial assistance options are available through the hospital including extended payment plans.

CONCLUSION

Along with the recently opened The Children's Behavioral Health Unit, which was a $5 million investment, the facility also allocated an additional $2 million to upgrading the hospital's adult behavior health unit and substance abuse treatment unit.

[1] https://citehealth.com/rehab-centers/wisconsin/cities/appleton/affinity-health-systems-inc#reviews
[2] GoogleReviews
[3] https://www.yelp.com/biz/ascension-ne-wisconsin-st-elizabeth-hospital-appleton?osq=st+elizabeth+hospital
[4] https://www.yellowpages.com/appleton-wi/mip/st-elizabeth-hospital-462074022?lid=462074022
[5] https://www.facebook.com/pg/AscensionStElizabethHospital/reviews/?ref=page_internal
