ABOUT VA PUGET SOUND HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

Located in Tacoma, Wash., the VA Puget Sound Health Care System is one of Washington’s eight mental health facilities run by the state and offers a variety of medical, health, and wellness services to veterans. Clients seeking treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders can access treatment through the center’s mental health division or the facility’s specialized programs for female or homeless veterans.

The American Lake Division and the Seattle Division are two main hubs of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System. However, many services occur on an outpatient basis, and there are community-based outpatient sites in Bellevue, Bremerton, Federal Way, Mount Vernon, North Seattle, Port Angeles, and South Sound. Detox is not available on site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The treatment process at VA Puget Sound begins with a consultation and comprehensive evaluation. Clients can stop at the facility or call to schedule an appointment for an evaluation. Once completed, the results of the evaluation are used to determine the best method of treatment.

Most of the treatment programs incorporate a combination of individual counseling, group therapy, family counseling, and medication management, if necessary. Family counseling and services are an important aspect of the treatment process and used in 61.8 percent of Washington’s facilities. This treatment method focuses on resolving relationship concerns so that clients can reconnect with their families and build a stronger support network.

In addition to general programming, the center offers specialized substance abuse treatment for female veterans at two stand-alone clinics. These clinics also offer primary care services and counseling for mental health concerns, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and military sexual trauma (MST). PTSD receives a particular amount of attention as it is linked to other conditions. Up to 30 percent of the facilities in Washington provide treatment designed specifically for clients who have been diagnosed with PTSD.

Veterans without permanent housing can also find help through the Homeless Veterans program. In addition to substance abuse treatment, participants may access educational opportunities, job training, and housing assistance. Job training is a rare and valuable service in Washington, as only 15.5 percent of facilities in the state offer vocational training and rehabilitation services.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

VA Puget Sound Health Care System employs a diverse staff of doctors, nurses, counselors, and other health and wellness professionals. That facility is managed and licensed by the state’s department of mental health.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility follows the design of similar VA facilities across the country that blends clinical with semi-clinical facilities in order to provide clients with access to medical care in a more relaxed environment for mental health services. To date, the four individuals polled on the matter by Rehabs.com appreciated the facilities' overall cleanliness.

Facility Cleanliness and Upkeep: 4/5

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com about the VA Puget Sound Health Care System at the time of this writing provided mixed to positive reviews. Two of the alumni rated the facility four out of five stars or higher for its staff support. "If not for inpatient i might not have stayed clean. Also, if they didn't introduce me to narcotics anonymous i would have relapsed," alum Bernie wrote.

The other alum who gave a one out of five star rating when asked if treatment was worth the cost complained about the center's staff. "The only positive experience so far has been my transition case manager, and my physical therapist. The staff I have met are consistently rude to patients and many veterans are misinformed and misdirected in where they need to go for different things," they wrote.

On Google, VA Puget Sound Health Care System earned an average of 3.4 out of five stars from five reviews to date.[1] The negative feedback doesn’t appear to be related to experience with the facility. The positive feedback centered around the staff members who alumni found to be “friendly and accommodating,” despite a “huge patient load” that makes the “wait times long sometimes.”

On Yelp, the facility earned an average of three out of five stars from six reviews.[2] Feedback ranged from the “beautiful campus” that included a “golf course” to the “rude” staff.

WHAT FRIENDS AND FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing, only one loved one provided feedback about the VA Puget Sound to Rehabs.com. The feedback was mostly positive, with the step-parent giving the facility four out of five stars for its exercise and leisure opportunities, counseling options, and cleanliness. The loved one gave two out of five stars when asked about the price of treatment.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The single staff member polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided a positive review about VA Puget Sound. The clinical trauma therapist described the center as “one of the premier programs to deal with duel diagnosis of addictive behavior and psychological behavior.” He gave five out of five stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, privacy, loyalty to patients, and protocols training. Arthur also endorsed the staff, reporting that all of them are licensed medical professionals.

FINANCING

VA Puget Sound is among the 14.5 percent of facilities in Washington that provide services to veterans at no charge. The only stipulation is that clients have a clean military record and are in good standing with the VA. While not all services are covered by veterans benefits, clients can self-pay for additional services.

[1] Google Reviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/va-puget-sound-health-care-system-american-lake-division-tacoma
