ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER AT TYLER

University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, located in Tyler, Texas, is one of 126 (25.8 percent) centers in the state that offers residential treatment for adults struggling with mental illness. The program is intended to help clients meet their recovery goals in a supportive and structured environment in order for them to be prepared to re-enter their community after treatment. The unit is a secure unit located on the third floor of building A at the University of Texas (UT) Health Science Center.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The center's treatment goal is to set-up the appropriate treatment for long-term success in each client while maintaining the least restrictive environment. The treatment team and patient work together on this goal until the time of discharge.

The facility’s Court Competency Restoration Program assists clients who are under court-ordered treatment commitments. Clients in this program go through weekly training in UT Health’s “Court Competency Workbook” and are given quizzes throughout to demonstrate progress. After passing the “Court Competency Pre-Test” and meeting with the doctor, they will have the opportunity to be assessed for the final court competency exam.

Clients on the unit have an opportunity to learn job skills and earn money to prepare for life after discharge. Other training and activities offered include social skills training, stress and anger management, physical and mental health education, exercise, life and work skills, cognitive/social skills, and more.

Clients follow a structured schedule five days per week with additional time allowed in the evenings and on the weekends for rest and visits with friends and family. There is a designated visitation area as well as a large dining room and program/activity areas for visits.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center's treatment team is led by a medical doctor who is board certified in psychiatry and neurology and has practiced psychiatry for 20 years. There are other support staff on the unit but their credentials are not listed on the facility’s website, though 98 percent of treatment facilities in Texas have continuing education requirements for staff. The sole individual polled by Rehabs.com to date provided a four-star rating for the center staff's level of experience and training.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility offers 30 beds in a hospital setting. The unit offers semi-private rooms each equipped with a private bathroom and grooming station. Each room is equipped with a television and locker area for residents to secure their personal items, increasing the client’s comfort and security while in treatment.

Recreational activities on the unit include Nintendo Wii games, movies and popcorn, weekly Bingo tournaments, board and card games, dances, musical instruments, events and parties, and exercise equipment.

Clients are able to enjoy outings as incentives to be earned. Possible incentives include an Outing Adventure Club, which gives residents an opportunity to visit places such as the Caldwell Zoo, Tyler State Park, Walmart, bowling alleys, etc. Another incentive is the “Lunch Bunch” program where qualified residents have the opportunity to enjoy their choice of food and drink at UT’s Blue Star Cafe while also interacting with the general public.

The Resident of the Month is chosen as a single client who has demonstrated outstanding engagement in their plan of care and is chosen every month by the Recovery Team. The Resident of the Month is recognized in front of their peers and receives a $20 credit toward a future outing adventure.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com had yet to receive feedback from former clients of the facility. However, secondary sources revealed very positive feedback. On the facility’s Google reviews page, there is an overall rating of 4.1 out of five stars based on 34 total reviews.[1] It should be noted that most reviews indicated they were for facility itself, not its psychiatric unit.

Alum D.S., who gave five stars, wrote: “The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. They helped make a difficult situation easier to deal with.” G.T., another alum, supported that viewpoint. She gave five stars and wrote, “Kind caring professional staff.” Several other reviewers agreed that staff members were comforting.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave a largely positive review, offering four- and five-star ratings for the facility's holistic offerings, its visitation policies, counseling options, and the amount of family participation.
