ABOUT ETMC BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER

Part of the larger Behavioral Health Center at the East Texas Medical Center (ETMC), the hospital’s Chemical Dependency Unit provides both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs for adults and adolescents struggling with addiction. Medically monitored detoxification is available for individuals dealing with the physical effects of early withdrawal.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to ETMC’s website, the center offers no cost evaluations with qualified mental health professionals to determine if treatment is needed. The appropriate level of care usually depends on the severity of the addiction and current stage of recovery. Each client receives an individualized treatment plan regardless of the level of care.

Treatment options at ETMC include initial detoxification, inpatient residential, intensive outpatient, and outpatient care. There are separate adult and adolescent units for both men and women, each monitored by medical and psychiatric staff. Adolescent treatment is designed for clients ages 13 to 17.

The center’s website notes the inpatient stabilization program is for people having a mental health crisis and a doctor’s order is required for admission. The typical path for the inpatient program follows this sequence: stabilize the crisis, assessment and diagnosis, detox if necessary, medication management, individual or group therapy, plan the next steps of treatment, and return home.

Detoxification typically takes four to seven days to complete, while residential inpatient can last between 28 days and three months. The unit’s “New Choices” outpatient program allows individuals to maintain ties to work and home while commuting to treatment three to five days per week during the day or evening.

Programming includes pairing of individual, group, and family counseling, along with medication management and 12-step support groups (AA or NA). Didactic education groups provide clients with information about the physical and mental aspects of addiction, as well as the process of change and recovery.

Chemical dependency care groups allow peer-support within each unit for dealing with relapse triggers and challenges faced upon leaving treatment.

ETMC’s website notes there is a new 18 bed PTSD unit at ETMC Behavioral Health Center along with outpatient programs. The PTSD program is open to active and veteran members of the military, police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and victims of serious crimes or accidents.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Staff includes medical doctors, board-certified psychiatrists, nurses, and licensed chemical dependency counselors (LCDC).

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There's currently no information provided on the facility's website or otherwise regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. They highlighted the quality counseling and care from staff, while also noting a below-average physical facility.

“Strengths: Good counseling, doctors are good.
