Creek VA Medical Center in southwestern Amarillo, and outpatient clinics in Childress, Lubbock, and Dalhart, Texas, and Clovis, N.M. One of just 90 facilities throughout the state of Texas with services dedicated exclusively to veterans and their families, the 55-bed Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center offers a "full continuum” of medical and mental health care services for substance abuse disorders (SUDs), PTSD, and other serious mental and behavioral health disorders.

As an outpatient location, the Center for Therapy and Recovery - the building from which the Substance Use Disorder Program is housed - is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Amarillo VA Health Care System provides few details regarding its SUD treatment services, other than that “there are proven methods to help Veterans recover from alcohol or drug misuse and dependence, including mutual help groups and effective treatment.” Services are also designed to help Vets dealing with withdrawal, compulsive behaviors, and other undesirable symptoms of problematic drug and alcohol dependency.

In the sole Rehabs.com survey respondent to date, a former client indicated that they attended both individual and group counseling sessions on a daily basis, and that they received aftercare following treatment.

In addition, the Handbook of Military Social Work notes that across the VA, the most common method used to treat addiction is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in combination with education and support.

The Amarillo VA Center also offers specialized services for homeless vets, including assistance with finding housing, employment, health care, and more.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Thomas E. Creek Center employs **physicians, psychologists, and nurses. The single alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility four out of five stars for the staff’s level of training and experience and for the support provided.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the center regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however, the Rehabs.com survey respondent awarded the center four out of five stars for its cleanliness and three stars for its accommodations, meals, and exercise and leisure options.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

In the sole Rehabs.com survey response to date, former client R.R.E. indicated that they’d recommend the facility to others, though they encouraged prospective clients: “You must be the change!" R.R.E. also gave the VA center four out of five stars for the quality of its individual and group therapy provided, but just one star for its holistic offerings.

Secondary sites demonstrated mixed coverage of the center as a whole: to date, this VA has average ratings of 4.0 out of five stars based on 294 Facebook reviews (where the organization can manage its own page), 3.9 out of five stars from 39 Google reviews, and on Yelp, just a pair of one- and three-star reviews.

Of those dissatisfied with the treatment they received, reviewers repeatedly cited long wait times and other administrative problems: "It is so hard to get timely care, and I'm in excruciating pain!" R.A. wrote in a representative review on Facebook. However, reviews also contained a number of praises regarding VA center staff: "My husband is a Viet Nam era veteran and we feel privileged to have the Amarillo VA hospital to help with his medical needs. The current director has made some very positive changes and we feel welcome when we go there and confident that he will receive the care and concern that he deserves," J.H. wrote in a representative review.

FINANCING

The VA Medical Center is one of just 271 (62.9 percent of) facilities in the state of Texas that accepts private health insurance; according to its website, however, “ VA does not bill Medicare or Medicaid for reimbursement.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/VAAmarillo/reviews/?ref=pageinternal [2] https://www.google.com/search?q=amarillo+va+health+care+system+amarillo+tx&oq=Amarillo+VA+Health+Care+System&gsl=psy-ab.3.1.0l2.5682.5682.0.8200.1.1.0.0.0.0.85.85.1.1.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..0.1.85....0.B3uzqFdJ7c4#lrd=0x870151cf76eb5e89:0x3ff4c5a2fd0ae0b5,1,,
[3] https://www.yelp.com/biz/veterans-affairs-health-care-system-amarillo?osq=Amarillo+VA+Health+Care+System
