ABOUT WOMEN AT THE WELL MINISTRIES

Located in Athens, Tenn., between Chattanooga and Knoxville, Women at the Well Ministries (WATW) is a long-term, faith-based discipleship program for adult women struggling with chemical dependency, as well as other “life-controlling problems.” This is one of the state's only 72 (31.7 percent) treatment facilities with female-only programming.

The long-term residential program utilizes a combination of lifestyle discipleship, a Bible-based curriculum, and counseling to help clients change destructive behavior. WATW does not provide detoxification services on-site. The facility is among the 24.9 percent of Tennessee facilities to provide a long-term residential program.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility's website, before admission, potential clients participate in an initial health screening and online questionnaire to ensure WATW is an appropriate program for them.

The central component of treatment at Women at the Well Ministries is adhering to Christian values, beliefs and tenants. The facility’s website states: “Our Bible-based curriculum is designed in such a way to emphasize introspective thinking and works hand-in-hand with our Christian counseling.”

The residential program typically lasts between 12 to 15 months, and women move through two primary phases. During phase one, clients participate in a highly-structured schedule of Bible study classes and pastoral counseling “to begin to cultivate a Christ-like character.” During this phase of treatment, residents spend four to six hours a day in educational classes, counseling sessions, or chapel. Along with core programming, residents also participate in artistic expression sessions, nightly devotionals, and recreational therapy.

Therapy focuses on helping women identify self-defeating behaviors and false beliefs, and replacing them with a genuine relationship with Christian philosophies and practices. Topics addressed through group and individual counseling sessions include positive peer Influence, accountability, conflict resolution, and personal responsibility.

During phase two, clients take-on a mentorship role to newer clients and begin to receive life skills and vocational training, which may include clerical, food management, cash register operation, merchandising, janitorial, and more. Once a resident completes core programming, they may have the opportunity to enroll into WATW’s six-month intern program. During this internship, clients pursue to become an intern staff member while attending college or continue into WATW’s Emerging Leaders Program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff; however, the sole alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date on staff support awarded it five out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The center's website notes the mountaintop campus is situated on 17 acres and includes five buildings — three for staff (some live on the premises), one for treatment and education, and one for clients. The 27-bed, three-level residence offers eight shared bedrooms and nine bathrooms, as well as a kitchen and common living areas. Residents are responsible for maintaining the residences and performing daily duties such as cooking, cleaning, and yard work.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two former residents polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing praised most aspects of the facility. Out of five stars, alum Tanya gave perfect five-star ratings for the treatment staff’s level of training and experience and the facility’s cleanliness. "Be ready to be there for 18 months min and it is very structured. I knew in my heart Jesus Christ was the answer," she wrote.

Alum P.L. echoed this approval of the facility, particularly the staff. “Women at the Well is a great facility for any woman who is going through any life controlling issues. They are caring, supporting and loving.”

Of the four individuals who left reviews for the treatment center on Google at the time of this writing, all four provided five out of five-star ratings.[1] "THis ministry is wonderful in that it is Christian based, and accepts no government funding. It has graduated close to 50 women from it's residential program," L.B. wrote in a representative review.

The center received similarly high praise on its Facebook page, which management can edit, with a 4.7-star average rating from 40 users to date.[2] Many comments praise the facility's faith-based approach, and K.C. representatively wrote, "The leadership is God focused.
