ABOUT GATEWAY REHAB β SQUIRREL HILL

Gateway Rehab, a non-profit organization that operates 22 facilities in Pennsylvania and Ohio, offers a continuum of addiction services for adolescents and adults. Located in a residential neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pa., Gateway Rehab Squirrel Hill provides specialized, age- and gender-specific intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for individuals struggling with substance abuse. The Squirrel Hill location does not offer on-site detoxification.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Gateway Rehab Squirrel Hill tailors treatment to its clients. To start, participants undergo a substance abuse assessment for clinicians to form an individualized care plan. The facility offers specialized programs for adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 25, adults over 40, and gender-specific tracks for all ages.

The program combines 12-Step immersion with evidence-based treatment methods, specifically cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Clients also participate in individual counseling and small group sessions. Counseling is designed to address underlying issues of addiction and modify destructive behavior patterns. Relapse prevention and coping skills also are integral in the recovery process.

Along with counseling and educational sessions, the program incorporates Twelve-Step Facilitation (TSF), which is a manual-guided model of treatment that introduces clients to 12-Step principles and practices and connects them to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Clients attend 12-Step meetings, learn 12-Step tools of recovery, familiarize themselves with program literature, and perform βstep work.β Although Gateway Rehab strongly recommends 12-Step involvement, alternative curricula may be available to clients who prefer not to participate in this model of recovery.

The facility also offers a regimen of medication-assisted therapy (e.g., Suboxone and Vivitrol) to coincide with core programming. Morning and evening sessions are available five days a week to accommodate client schedules. Upon successful completion, Gateway Rehab invites clients to remain active in the alumni association, and the treatment network has introduced its own addiction recovery mobile app,12:01.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Gateway Rehab is accredited by the Joint Commission and is a member of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers. There currently is no information provided on the facility's website or otherwise regarding its treatment staff.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Alumni polled by Rehabs.com offered mixed reviews. They held staff experience in high esteem by rating it 4.5 stars, on average, out of five. They would recommend this rehab, also rating this variable 4.5 stars, on average.

Yet, they rendered three stars, on average, for exercise and leisure offerings. And they offered a 2.67-star rating, on average, for: counseling options, family participation, connectivity, cleanliness, and affordability.

One alum rated treatment effectiveness, accommodations, and meals with four stars. Yet, this individual offered the following comment: "communication attention to detail lack of effort lack of staff i was there cause I had to be."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Feedback from friends and family generally was positive, according to Rehab.com survey data. Loved ones offered more than four stars, on average, out of five stars for staff experience, family participation, and cleanliness. However, these respondents had more neutral opinions regarding holistic offerings, which may reflect the emphasis on 12-Steps.

Citing the knowledgeable staff as a strength, an anonymous loved one told Rehabs.com: βI thought the process from beginning to end was well organized and professional every step of the way.β Although reporting a relapse, a friend of a client shared this positive opinion of staff, adding: βMy friend went there and went back to drugs once she was out. The staff was nice and informative but didn't seem to help.β

Reporting a beneficial experience, a child of a client said: "They seem to get good results" and added βI would recommend this place. My mom was there and came out a lot better than before she went in.β And another anonymous reviewer wrote: "This is overall a very good facility - the best in the Pittsburgh area, in my opinion."

FINANCING

According to the facilityβs website, Gateway Rehab is in-network with most insurance providers.
