ABOUT BRADFORD REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER - BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES

Founded in 1887, Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC), through its Behavioral Health Services (BHS), offers comprehensive psychiatric services and an array of residential and outpatient treatments for substance addiction disorders. BRMC includes a 16-bed, co-occurring disorders unit structured to provide 21 days of residential treatment, as well as onsite detox and psychiatric units.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

If necessary, the clients may begin treatment in the detox unit, where they receive 24-hour medical care prior to participating in highly structured and therapeutically diverse rehabilitation services. Medically-assisted treatment (MAT) utilizing buprenorphine (Suboxone) may be administered, which is used in 758 treatment facilities in Pennsylvania to reduce the effects of withdrawal symptoms. Once completed, clients often move into the residential program.

During a 21-day stay on the BHS secured residential unit, clients participate in between seven and nine group sessions each day, consisting of psychoeducational classes, didactic groups, and recreational therapy.

If necessary, clients may also participate in psychiatric counseling sessions, as the facility provides extensive coverage for co-occurring disorders. The acute day or partial hospitalization programs (PHP), integrated residential treatment, and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) all provide support for clients who have co-occurring disorders.

PHP clients receive a comprehensive initial evaluation to direct the development of their treatment plan. Then, clients participate in six hours of group, individual, and family therapies, four days a week. Medication management and a buprenorphine maintenance program may also be incorporated into a client’s treatment plan. IOP clients participate in therapy three hours per day, three days a week, with one hour dedicated to individual therapy, for eight weeks. The facility offers IOP treatment five days per week, including evening options.

Every level of care incorporates family and couples therapy, and clients also work with staff members through programming to develop aftercare treatment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The BHS staff includes medical practitioners and mental health professionals. Psychiatrists, registered nurses, licensed psychologists and therapists, certified addiction counselors, social workers, and case managers make up the treatment team.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

While in the residential program, clients are expected to complete chores and exercise. During the detox phase, clients may receive two adult visitors on allotted evenings. The co-occurring disorder residential unit is tobacco-free and allows visitors aged 12 and older. Lunch is included in partial hospitalization programs, and BHS accepts and complies with court- and probation-mandated cases.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

All five alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave BRMC moderately positive ratings, especially in terms of treatment effectiveness, staff, and dual diagnosis treatment. Overall, alumni expressed moderate satisfaction with the level of family participation offered by the facility and polarized opinions concerning holistic offerings, though alumni appreciated the cleanliness of the facility.

Cleanliness and Upkeep: 4.3/5
Holistic Offerings: 3.3/5
Family Participation: 3.2/5

Although two of five alumni responding to Rehabs.com surveys indicated they had experienced relapses, both would recommend the treatment program and agreed that it was worth the cost. Overall, alumni moderately approved of the facility's cost.

Affordability: 3.3/5

On BRMC's Facebook page, which the facility can manage, 259 reviewers to date rated the center overall an average 3.2 out of five stars.[1] However, the reviews are about the facility as a whole, not the behavioral health unit. Alumni and loved ones were mostly split on the treatment they received from staff, detailing incidents of either friendly and professional care or misdiagnoses, among other issues.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single anonymous loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave BRMC's behavioral health services high ratings despite noting subsequent relapses. They rated the facility five out of five stars in counseling options and four stars in every other metric, including exercise and leisure offerings, family participation, affordability, and facility cleanliness. The loved one appreciated the convenient location and wrote that BRMC “helped him get better, but unfortunately we are repeating the past and he is again sick.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

On Indeed, 34 current and former employees to date rated BRMC an average 3.6 out of five stars.[2] Reviewers mostly felt the facility employed a compassionate staff, although some complained of heavy workloads given by upper management. One employee wrote: "Wonderful staff, good teamwork, always a new opportunity to learn something new," but they also criticized BRMC for offering "little to no breaks when it gets busy."

FINANCING

BRMC accepts most private insurance plans. It is also one of the 252 state facilities to accept state-funded health insurance like Pennsylvania Medicaid and is among the 34% of facilities to accept Medicare.

CONCLUSION

BRMC hosts a variety of events focused on raising awareness in the community and providing clients with the chance to reconnect with peers in recovery. Some of the events are community-focused like the Drive for Life Annual Ladies’ Scramble Tournament, which is entering its fifth year. Other events focus on family and client health, like CPR classes.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/Bradford-Regional-Medical-Center-114402001946097/reviews/
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Bradford-Regional-Medical-Center/reviews
