ABOUT BEACON LIGHT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Founded in the early 1900s, Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems is a not-for-profit agency that provides a full continuum of care for children, adolescents, and adults struggling with behavioral health disorders and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Headquartered in small-town Bradford, on Pennsylvania's New York border, the organization operates several residential and outpatient facilities in the region.

It should be noted that Beacon Light provides extensive services for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental-health disorders, but does not appear to treat substance use disorder directly.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Among a broad range of services — including shelters, in-home foster care, and services for individuals with developmental disabilities — Beacon Light offers three primary, psychiatric-related programs.

C.S.R.U. (Community Stabilization and Reintegration Residential Unit) is a short-term program for adults struggling with co-occurring mental health disorders and developmental disabilities. Typically lasting no longer than 90 days, C.S.R.U.’s treatment consists of crisis intervention, individual therapy, and identifying environmental stressors, in part through a focus on sensory awareness. The goal of the program is to help clients develop prosocial and adaptive behaviors as well as community-based support structures.

The remaining residential services are for youth. S.T.A.R. (short-term adolescent recovery, for ages 7–18) is the most-intensive level of treatment for adolescents; it’s designed to prevent hospitalization or long-term residential treatment, and to stabilize clients so that they can reintegrate into the home. The program consists of weekly or twice weekly psychiatric care; 24-hour nursing care; individual, group, and family therapy sessions; and on-site education.

If long-term term treatment is necessary, youth may be referred to one of Beacon Light’s seven residential programs. According to the program’s website, residential programs are appropriate for individuals who have not responded to treatment while living at home. Residents receive alternative education services and 24-hour supervision in a highly structured environment.

Outpatient services include counseling and medication management. Beacon Light also offers dedicated services for youth displaying sexually aggressive behavior. And in a particularly innovative service, the organization provides mobile medication management, a community-based service in which the agency liaises between the client and the prescriber, to make sure that the medication program is properly followed.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, and master's-level clinicians. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave it a one-star rating and two three-star ratings.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Beacon Light operates multiple home-like facilities for adolescents in the cities of Bradford, Youngsville, and Towanda. There are five residential homes in Bradford, which accommodate up to eight residents per home. The Youngsville facility can accommodate up to 16 adolescent girls and boys, while the eight-bed Towanda location offers a campus-styled setting for adolescent males.

Pictures of the CSRU unit for adults show a simple, clinical facility with spartan decorations and a grassy field.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

"I am so happy with how things turned out with my stay there. I loved the staff they were always there to help me along with the other patients," alum J.M. wrote on Facebook of their stay at Beacon Light, in the only alumni review Rehabs.com was able to uncover at the time of this writing.[1] A further discussion of reviews sourced from secondary sites can be found below.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The four loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mixed feedback. Only one reviewer indicated that they would recommend Beacon Light; two remained neutral on this question and one indicated that they would not recommend the facility. "The staff provided excellent support and guidance, and long term improvement has been seen after treatment," was the appraisal of the most positive reviewer, Duke. However, two other reviewers noted that the facility was understaffed for its client load, and one described staff as "unkind." The three individuals polled on the facility's performance in a variety of treatment metrics gave it a one-star, a three-star, and a four-star rating for its treatment effectiveness and its family participation, and a one-star rating and two three-star ratings for its counseling options and ability to treat co-occurring disorders.

At the time of this writing, secondary sites yielded mixed reviews, most of them from clients' or alumni's loved ones. The facility had a 3.6-star average rating based on 20 reviews on a self-managed Facebook page, a single four-star rating on Google, and four one-star ratings on YellowPages.com.[2] [3] The negative comments tended to cite harsh treatment of young clients and their families. In a particularly descriptive review, H.B., writing on YellowPages.com, reported "removal of emotional support, not giving child mail of encouragement and even many Christmas cards, and not even able to see her on Christmas day."

WHAT STAFF SAY

Staff reviews posted on secondary sites were mixed at the time of this writing. On Indeed.com, Beacon Light had a 3.6-star average rating based on 17 reviews, and on Glassdoor, the organization had two one-star ratings and a three-star rating.[4] [5] Negative reviewers repeatedly described unhelpful management, sometimes resulting in staff feeling unsafe or even being injured — in the words of one staffer posting on Indeed.com, staff are allegedly sometimes faced with clients and situations that they "have neither the tools nor training to handle." However, other reviewers described hard-working and helpful client-facing staff and a commendable company ethos. “Our facility is geared toward the therapeutic approach to behavior changes in youth and teens… Our staff pride themselves on the success we are able to offer our clients,” one reviewer wrote in a representative review on Indeed.com.

FINANCING

The facility’s website indicates that Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance are accepted on at least some programs, but does not clarify which. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center’s affordability gave it a one-star rating and two three-star ratings.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/BeaconLightBehavioralHealthSystems/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[2] https://goo.gl/TPqKKq
[3] https://www.yellowpages.com/bradford-pa/mip/beacon-light-behavioral-health-systems-453282724?lid=453282724
[4] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Beacon-Light-Behavioral-Health-Systems/reviews
[5] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Beacon-Light-Behavioral-Health-Systems-Reviews-E1071065.htm
