Editorial Review

ABOUT HARBOR BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Located in Toledo, Ohio, Harbor Behavioral Health offers an array of outpatient programs for children, teens, and adults struggling with substance use and/or other mental health disorders. The agency operates about half a dozen locations with Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Treatment Programs in Toledo and neighboring towns. What is now Harbor began more than a century ago, originally as home and school for girls.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

While treatment provided directly by Harbor Behavioral Health AOD programs includes intensive and general outpatient programming, staff members can also provide referrals and help to coordinate care for higher levels of need, such as detoxification or residential rehab. Typically, appointments are required for assessment and initial treatment services; however some clinics offer walk-in hours. An adult Alcohol and Other Drug assessment takes approximately one to two hours.

Making use of The Matrix Model and Motivational Interviewing (MI), Harbor Behavioral Health facilitates group therapy sessions focused on relapse prevention techniques, trigger avoidance, and the development of support networks. Each week, clients also meet with a case manager to address their vocational and independent living needs. Coordination with court orders is available.

In specialized outpatient groups scheduled throughout the week, adults can pick up coping skills, learn effective ways to search for employment, practice mindfulness, or attend classes in wellness management and recovery. Gender-specific groups are also offered.

Intensive outpatient programming entails three, three-hour sessions each week for 18 weeks, while the 20-week-long non-intensive programs meet weekly for 90 minutes to two hours at a time.

Programming for youth also consists of psychiatric evaluations, counseling services, and medication management. Parent-child interaction therapy and groups on parenting are offered.

An employee assistance program is available and most Toledo locations are accessible on public bus routes.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Harbor Behavioral Health’s staff is comprised of board-certified psychiatrists, certified substance abuse professionals, and master's-level counselors..

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three Harbor Behavioral Health AOD alumni polled by Rehabs.com as of this writing highlighted counseling options, family participation, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and the facility's cleanliness. Two of the former clients granted four or five out of five stars for each metric measured, and one provided threes and fours. Written comments cited both staff and groups as facility strengths, although one alum reported a need for financial assistance, which they did not receive.

On Google, alumni feedback was less favorable. All written comments centered complaints about lacks in professionalism, caring manners, or organization. Twelve individuals contributed to an average facility rating of 2.2 out of five stars.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

In their Rehabs.com survey responses, a pair of loved ones were also less enthusiastic than polled alumni. Both granted moderate three-star ratings for treatment effectiveness. While they rated the holistic therapy offerings more generously (both awarding four stars, and one noting the inclusion of yoga), one reported a need for more staff training. They agreed with alumni on the high quality of groups, but offered split ratings of two and four stars each for staff experience and co-occurring treatment. Data suggested moderate satisfaction with family participation.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive any reviews from this facility's staff.

On Indeed, however, the main Toledo facility received an average rating of 3.8 out of five based on five reviews. Four employees complimented fellow treatment staff members and indicated strong commitment to the center's mission. "Co-workers were a great source of support and knowledge," one reviewer wrote. "I enjoy working with clients and being part of their recovery," another reported, in a representative review. One complaint referenced too-heavy case loads.[2]

FINANCING

The Harbor Behavioral Health website notes that services have a variety of costs. Medicaid, Medicare, and most private insurance plans are accepted, and clients can self-pay for individual classes and group meetings.

[1] https://goo.gl/UVEkhp
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Harbor-Behavioral-Health/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Toledo%2C+OH&fjobcat=service
