ABOUT UNITED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Based in Columbus, Ohio, United Behavioral Health (UBH) is an insurance plan administered by Optum Behavioral Solutions. It provides specialized behavioral health services to employees of Ohio State’s medical plan. Services are available by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and include behavioral health assessments and referrals.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The program provides services to participants struggling with substance use disorder, anger management, anxiety, compulsive disorders, depression, marriage and family issues, serious mental illnesses, and stress. Members with a medical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder are also eligible for services through the plan. Those on the autism spectrum may receive clinical therapeutic intervention from a qualified provider as indicated in an approved applied behavioral analysis treatment plan, up to 20 hours per week.

The insurance benefits are available to all enrolled employees and their enrolled family members. There are in-network and out-of-network benefits; out-of-network provider’s services will potentially cost the member more than an in-network provider’s services.

Before benefits can be received through the plan, the member must first contact UBH for prior authorization of any type of non-routine inpatient or outpatient services that are to be provided. An example would be an office visit lasting longer than 60 minutes or a psychological testing. Non-routine services, such as an office visit lasting less than 45 minutes, does not require prior approval.

The program provides assistance to its members in locating a participating provider who can help them with their specific issues. Clients in need of emergency services can access the nearest emergency room for care. In most cases, emergency care is covered with no issues by the plan. If the client requires inpatient admission, prior authorization must be obtained by the facility first.

An Employee Assistance Program is available through the state to offer support services for various behavioral health concerns and provides mental health referrals and consultations for the employees. Education, training, critical incident stress management, mediation, and organization transition services are also provided.

The Disability Solutions Program works to identify employees early who have applied for or are already on short-term mental health disability to provide them with services to prevent long-term disability due to mental health concerns.

Optum Training Offerings include classes on mental health, substance use, and wellness to employees. The classes are typically provided at the members’ worksites, but the classes have to be requested through the Employee Assistance Program by the human resources department.

Finally, the Family Support Program offers help for dependents on the plan up to age 26 who are struggling with substance abuse. Licensed clinicians will assess, educate, support, and provide case management to the family members.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

All calls for assistance are received by licensed, master’s-level clinicians with special training on how to assist members who may be experiencing a mental health emergency, an urgent need, or routine issues. The program also publishes a list of approved providers for members to review and search.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

D.T., the one alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, gave United Behavioral Health positive feedback and reported that they got sober based on the services that were provided to them. The 26-to-39-year-old, who sought treatment for substance use disorder based on a referral from a loved one, gave UBH five out of five stars for its staff support, its staff's availability, its staff's level of training and experience, and its staff's respect for clients' treatment preferences.

FINANCING

The facility publishes all of its costs online and provides the information in writing to all enrolled members. Examples of costs include a $20 copayment per visit for in-network office visits or intensive outpatient care, and a $30 copayment for out-of-network office visits or intensive outpatient care. Single-member plans have a $200 deductible for in-network providers and $400 for out-of-network providers, while family plans have a $400 in-network and $800 out-of-network deductible. For inpatient visits, members pay 100 percent of the charges until the deductible has been met and then pay a 20 percent copay on services until the out-of-pocket maximum is reached.
