Editorial Review

ABOUT THE LANTERN CENTER FOR RECOVERY

A nonprofit organization based in Cleveland, Ohio, the Lantern Center for Recovery offers long-term residential care for men struggling with chemical dependency. It is one of just 75 (18.5 percent) of long-term residential treatment centers in the state. Services are provided at no cost. The facility also offers transitional sober housing for alumni, though detoxification services are not available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Admission begins with a phone call, followed by an in-person interview of about 30 minutes. Clients are then received into the facility, placed on a wait list, or referred to appropriate treatment elsewhere. Residents participate in two phases of rehabilitation.

The first phase of treatment is highly structured and facilitated on the main facility for 90 days. Each man works with the program director to develop an individualized plan of recovery. During this time, a 12-step immersion serves as the program's core approach, with clients attending five discussion or process groups on-site each day. Residents also attend community-based Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

After completing the first phase, the men are eligible to transition to a separate sober living house, where they will continue participating in 12-step meetings and group therapy at The Lantern. The housing program requires random drug testing, monthly evaluation sessions, and adherence to community living rules. Groups meet six days a week, and Sundays are scheduled for family visits.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility's website, group meetings on-site are facilitated by community volunteers. No other information is provided regarding treatment staff qualifications; however, all Ohio substance abuse treatment facilities have continuing education requirements for staff. The sole individual polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing rated the level of staff training and experience three out of five stars, though identified "strong leadership" as a facility strength.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Lantern is a large, two-story living and meeting facility with several group lounges and meeting spaces. The building is furnished in a comfortable and modern style with an open kitchen and dining area. Website photographs feature bright windows and a community dog who appears to be welcomed and integrated into residents' lives. Current accommodations include a relatively new expansion, which increased the capacity to serve by more than two dozen beds.

A daily schedule indicated that residents participate in chores during the first phase of treatment. The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave four-star ratings for the facility's communication and visitor policies, as well as for the facility's cleanliness and upkeep. They also positively characterized the rules as "strict."

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from former clients of this facility, 13 Google reviewers all awarded the facility ratings of five out of five stars.[1] Many characterized the program as life-changing. In a representative review, alum J.B. wrote, "Changed my life and outlook on it," while alum Bud added, "This place not only changed my life but saved it and gave me my life back!"

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

To date, the single loved one who provided survey responses to Rehabs.com identified "good counseling" as a facility strength. Yet, this individual gave just two- or three-star ratings for the facility's counseling options, the program's ability to address co-occurring mental health concern, and holistic treatment options. Nevertheless, the overall effectiveness of treatment and the reviewer's likelihood to recommend The Lantern to other individuals were both rated four stars.

A single three-star reviewer on Yellowpages.com at the time of this writing asserted that the facility was not strict or consistent enough, but was overall "a wonderful place that truly cares about addiction and helping people."[2]

FINANCING

The first 90 days of treatment and accommodations are offered free of charge. Then, men living in transitional housing are charged $350 per month. The Lantern Center does not accept government funding but is supported by private foundations.

[1] GoogleReviews

[2] https://www.yellowpages.com/cleveland-oh/mip/the-lantern-457417149
