ABOUT THE ED KEATING CENTER: JEAN MARIE HOUSE

The Ed Keating Center operates sober living facilities for men and women out of three gender-specific locations in the Cleveland area. Formerly known as Maggie's House, Jean Marie House is the newest of the three homes, providing long-term care for women. The center emphasizes the importance of the 12-Steps and local community involvement, and maintains a strong association with alumni, according to an official Facebook page. This is one of the only 188 (46.6 percent) facilities in Ohio with female-specific programming.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

At the time of this writing, no information specific to treatment at Jean Marie House was provided by the facility, but it is presented as comparable to the men's programs. In these, the first three months are spent attending group meetings, which are facilitated by individuals in recovery. Residents also attend 12-steps meetings nightly. Following the first three months of a nine-month program, clients of one Ed Keating program begin a work program, but it is not apparent that women participate in this form of therapy.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to The Ed Keating Center's website, the organization's founders brought with them significant experience working with other established treatment centers. One co-founder is a baseball Hall of Famer who named the center for a sports agent known for having lived well in recovery and supporting sober living programs. The center's program director is a licensed independent chemical dependency counselor. Additionally, in the state of Ohio, all substance abuse treatment facilities having continuing education requirements for staff members.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Photos on the official Facebook page of The Ed Keating Center showcase physical activity, outdoor spaces, and large, open meeting spaces. Inside, residents of the 35-bed Jean Marie House share dorm-style bedrooms, while outside are a large yard with multiple seating areas and a flower garden. The center offers a high level of availability, as the average number of residents at a treatment facility at one time was 18 individuals, as of 2016. Several photographs are of outdoor exercise and sport activities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from any former clients of Jean Marie House, a variety of postings to a Facebook page not monitored by the facility's staff reveal highly positive opinions and experiences. Twelve individuals each rated the house five out of five stars, and the only accompanying comment simply stated: "Great place." Dozens of other posts mention the facility, with almost unanimous praise for the lessons, ongoing connections, and activities offered at Jean Marie House. One poster reported visiting a local pool regularly while a resident at the facility.[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Survey responses from the sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date revealed a moderately favorable opinion of Jean Marie House with some key areas of weakness. Asked to rate their likelihood to recommend the program to others on a scale of one to five, the respondent selected three stars.

While awarding four stars for the effectiveness of treatment, this loved one nevertheless depicted a program that had very limited scope in addressing addiction. Metrics measuring opportunities for family participation and options in counseling approaches both received just one-star ratings. Five stars for the centrality of 12-step concepts to the program suggest that the reviewer did not find much other in-depth therapy being offered. The staff's level of training and experiencing received three stars. "People got sober but then other addictions are not worked on," they wrote. Accommodations fared better, with five-star ratings for meals, nutrition, and the facility's cleanliness and upkeep, and three stars each for policies regarding resident's connection with the outside world and for exercise and leisure activities -- the latter of which is frequently portrayed as a priority on Facebook.

WHAT STAFF SAY

In strong contrast to the loved one's review, the sole staff member polled by Rehabs.com rated family participation five stars. The reviewer identified no weaknesses in the program and cited its helpful outcomes as a strength. Notably, lower ratings of two and three stars respectively for exercise and leisure and counseling options would seem to support the loved one's perspective. The Jean Marie House employee rated the staff's level of training and experience a perfect five stars.

FINANCING

Services at The Ed Keating Center are offered to individuals regardless of their ability to pay. The center does not receive government agency assistance but does accept donations from individuals and organizations. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the affordability of treatment awarded high ratings of four and five stars

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Jean-Marie/169796973096578
