Editorial Review

ABOUT STELLA MARIS

Located in Cleveland, Ohio, Stella Maris provides a continuum of treatment services for individuals struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. The facility operates a long-term residential program for men, as well as outpatient treatment programs, supportive housing, and medically supervised detoxification for both men and women. In operation since 1948, the center is among 14 non-hospital facilities in Ohio to provide residential detox services.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

At Stella Maris, men and women stay an average of three to seven days in the detox unit. During the stabilization process, clients participate in addiction education, counseling, and are introduced to the 12-step model of recovery. Staff assist in planning and transitioning, which may entail residential care or outpatient services offered by the center.

Long-term residential programming for men lasts between three and six months. The program is based on a therapeutic community model of treatment, which prioritizes peer feedback and support. Residents receive individual and group counseling, dual diagnosis care for those struggling with co-occurring disorders, vocational counseling, and family education.

Residential alumni are typically referred to one of Stella Maris' outpatient programs (OPs). OP may involve between one to 10 hours of weekly programming that includes education, counseling, and other activities. In addition, 12-step meetings are hosted at the Stella Maris community facility every day and include gender-specific, open, and closed groups.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Stella Maris leadership team includes a medical doctor, registered nurse, master’s level social worker, and an executive director with a Ph.D. In addition to staff counselors and case managers, volunteers familiar with 12-Step recovery also regularly interact with clients.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Stella Maris’ detox program serves up to 16 men and women, and the residential program has space for 38 men. An executive director’s message on the facility’s website referenced a renovation of two buildings to expand outpatient offerings, including an outpatient detox program, as well as more sober housing.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Although Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni opinions to date, Stella Maris received overwhelmingly positive feedback on secondary review sites: 4.5 out of five stars based on 18 reviews on Google reviews and 4.8 out of five stars based on 61 reviews on Facebook. [1] [2] It should be noted that the facility may be able to monitor its Facebook page.

Many reviewers (alumni, loved ones) characterized the facility as “caring,” “compassionate,” and “life saving.” On Google reviews, alum Brandon wrote: “I would not be alive without the staff of Stella Maris or my brothers in the community.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Three loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date also offered overall favorable ratings for a number of evaluated metrics. Out of five stars, the loved ones offered three- and four-star ratings for the level of family participation, the cleanliness of the facility, and the staff's level of experience and training.

All three characterized staff as caring and helpful. Isolated criticism concerned need for more space, counselors, and training classes. "Very caring and helpful with the family," one anonymous loved one wrote.

WHAT STAFF SAY

To date, employees on secondary review sites offered generally positive opinions about Stella Maris: 3.9 out of five stars based on 79 reviews on Indeed and 3.3 stars based on 22 reviews on Glassdoor. [3] [4] Many commended co-workers and the pleasant, clean work environment; negative comments concerned unresponsive upper management, short breaks, and low advancement.

FINANCING

According to the facility's website, detoxification and outpatient programs may be covered by private insurance. However, Stella Maris does not accept private insurance for the men's residential program, though offers its services regardless of a person’s ability to pay and uses a sliding fee scale.

CONCLUSION

A recent website post by Cleveland.com reported the opening of recovery housing that can accommodate up to 16 women recovering from opioid addiction.

[1] https://goo.gl/0c3sya

[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/stellamariscleveland/reviews/?ref=page_internal

[3] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Stella-Maris/reviews

[4] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Stella-Maris-Reviews-E249543.htm
