Editorial Review

ABOUT EDNA HOUSE

Edna House is a long-term sober living facility for women in Cleveland, Ohio struggling with substance. The nonprofit facility, which opened in 2004, does not provide medically supervised detoxification services but does have priority status with other facilities in the area and assists clients in making arrangements. In Ohio, Edna House is among the 46 percent of facilities to provide specialized programming for women.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Clients must have completed detox prior to beginning the six-month treatment program at Edna House. Three phases of treatment all emphasize the importance of involvement with the local Cleveland recovery community. While in treatment, the women participate in local volunteer activities, including assisting a church with special events and delivering meals to homebound neighbors. Over the course of their residence, clients become increasingly independent with the support of their counselors and peers.

During the first three months, clients should expect not to work, nor to have access to individual transportation. Residents participate in six daily group meetings on-site, addressing such topics as anger and stress management, parenting, and trauma recovery. They attend GED classes and 12-step meetings, as well.

Clients in their second phase of treatment receive training and other assistance with obtaining employment and are expected to continue attending 12-step meetings and one-on-one therapy session each week. They also adhere to the house's less restrictive set of rules. This phase lasts a minimum of three months, but residents may stay longer as necessary.

The final phase is optional transitional housing at a separate, nearby facility. Clients attend support groups and learn about mentoring women in the early stages of recovery. In Ohio, the facility is among the 42.5 percent of facilities to provide employment counseling or training for clients.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Edna House website emphasizes the key role volunteers play in its program, listing individuals who have contributed their services as attorneys, police officers, maintenance workers, and members of local 12-step groups. The staff includes some program alumni and at least one of the organization's founders is in recovery herself.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

While in residence at Edna House, women live in a large brick home in a multifamily residential neighborhood. Photographs on the facility's official Facebook page indicated a large porch, garden, and comfortably furnished living spaces. The facility has a large and active alumni association with more than 200 participants.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The one alum polled by Rehabs.com to date, Shelly, would highly recommend the program and rated the effectiveness of treatment five out of five stars and the staff's level of training and experience four stars. She wrote that Edna House saved her life. On the other hand, the reviewer identified the small staff size as a weakness and gave less favorable ratings for most aspects of accommodations, including two stars apiece for meals, nutrition, and exercise and leisure activity. She did indicate that the house was clean and well-maintained, with a five-star rating.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com praised most aspects of the facility. She submitted five-star ratings for treatment effectiveness, meals, staff qualifications, family involvement, and counseling options. She, along with the alum reviewer, also indicated that treatment at Edna House was affordable. "Counseling and staff support were good," they wrote.

On Google, the facility has an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars, across 18 reviews. All but two reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Cathy wrote that Edna House was a "Great place for rehab" for her daughter. Another individual noted that friends who attended the facility were "well" and described it as a "safe place that helps these woman live a great life again!"[1]

FINANCING

The cost of treatment at Edna House is covered by individual and business donations.
