Editorial Review

ABOUT COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER — RAMAR CENTER

Founded in 1974, Community Health Center is amongst the 325 (80 percent) private nonprofit centers in the state that provides treatment, prevention, and housing services for individuals struggling with addictive and compulsive behaviors in northeast Ohio. The organization is an affiliate of the Summit County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board.

RAMAR (the Rocco Antenucci Memorial Adult Residential Center) is a residential rehab for men and women dealing with chronic substance abuse disorder, including those with a dual diagnosis, a treatment track offered at only 182 (44.8 percent) centers in the state. Outpatient services are also provided, and there are sober-living facilities on the campus.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment begins with a clinical assessment and evaluation carried out by the center’s medical director and staff psychologist. Clients receive individualized treatment plans based off findings from the test.

The program lasts 90 to 120 days and is built on the belief that addiction is a progressive and fatal but highly treatable illness. The building blocks of treatment are individual and group counseling and medical services, to monitor residents’ physical well being. Also available at this center are parenting classes, art therapy, 12-step meetings, life skills training, smoking cessation classes, and family therapy.

Community Health Center also runs an employment agency, to which it refers all clients for vocational services such as job skills training and placement.

After treatment, the center can refer clients to transitional housing, if appropriate, including two transitional living facilities located on-site, which offer longer-term accommodations for women, including pregnant women. Other aftercare options include weekly counseling, outpatient programs, and case management.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Community Health Care’s medical director is a physician who specializes in addiction treatment, and the clinical director is a PhD-level therapist. Staff level of experience and training received a three- and a four-star rating from the two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

RAMAR offers 28 beds: 14 for men and 14 for women. This suggests a higher level of availability, given that the average number of clients in a residential treatment facility at a given time was 18 individuals, as of 2016. Additionally, the center provides transportation to clients’ appointments, when needed. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date both awarded accommodations & amenities four out of five stars, and facility cleanliness received a three- and a four-star rating.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend treatment at RAMAR. “Great people, reliable teachings, strong support… Thank you Rebar for giving me my life back!” the anonymous reviewer wrote, giving the center four stars out of five in all 15 of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its overall effectiveness, its holistic options, its family program, its counseling options, and its treatment for co-occurring disorders. However, this form client did add that they felt there was a lack of follow-up care.

At the time of this writing, secondary review sites yielded mixed coverage. On Facebook, where Community Health Center manages its own page, the organization as a whole had a 4.2-star average rating (out of five) based on 19 reviews.[1] “CHC gives you hope gives you encouragement shows each of us we can live we can survive we can be sober we can follow our dreams and destiny Each counselor is caring and wants their clients to know they can do it,” L.J. wrote in a review representative of the two additional comments accompanying the 18 ratings left on Facebook.

On Google, three former clients averaged a 2.3-star rating for this facility.[2] One of the two one-star reviewers felt that the "staff is underqualified" and noted that there was a "lack of any structure." The reviewer finished by saying, "ramars facilities are falling apart and the lack of any structure whatsoever might hinder your recovery." The other one-star reviewer critiqued the food, felt that the center was not equipped to treat co-occurring disorders, mentioned drug use within the facility, and added, "There are no activities to keep patients moving, busy, or engaged."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would not recommend treatment at this facility, critiquing, "Poor percentage of clients who maintain sobriety." Despite giving a high, four-star rating for counseling options, this individual gave the center three stars for its overall effectiveness, and just one star for its exercise/leisure and holistic options. Feeling that readily available beds was a facility strength, this family member still offered only two stars for its family program and treatment for co-occurring disorders. “I know of quite a few people who went through this facility and many of them were using IN the facility. The staff does not seem qualified to do their jobs,” they added.

FINANCING

Community Health Center provides services to all those in need, regardless of their ability to pay. The center also accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare, (accepted at 46.6 percent of centers in the state) Medicaid, (accepted at 86.2 percent of Ohio treatment centers) and all managed healthcare plans. The program's affordability received a three- and a four-star rating from the two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/CHCAkron/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[2] GoogleReviews
