Editorial Review

ABOUT FRYE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Located in the community of Hickory in western N.C., Frye Regional Medical Center offers hospital-based, residential treatment for adults struggling with psychiatric or substance use disorders. To alleviate the symptoms of withdrawal, medical detoxification is available on-site for chemically dependent individuals.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients undergo an initial psychiatric and behavioral assessment to guide clinicians in forming an individualized plan of care. For adults struggling with chemical dependency, the hospital’s dual diagnosis treatment program addresses both the client’s addictive behaviors and the underlying mental health issues contributing to these behaviors.

Dual diagnosis treatment utilizes a combination of psychotherapy, educational classes, therapeutic activities, and an introduction to the 12-step model of recovery. Clients participate in a structured schedule of individual, group, and family counseling sessions, as well as educational classes on substance abuse, coping skills training, and relapse prevention.

Meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are held on-site, and clients may be encouraged to perform associated “step-work” of the peer-support programs. Medication management may also be incorporated into treatment to address the symptoms of mental health issues. Before clients are discharged, clinicians work with them to form a comprehensive aftercare plan.

According to the medical center’s website, the psychiatric treatment program is “designed to provide therapeutic stabilization for reality orientation.” To promote stabilization, the rehab facilitates a structured schedule of therapeutic and educational group sessions. Clients receive education on coping skills, self-esteem, relaxation, and stress management. If applicable, the program also addresses issues of trauma.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, the program is facilitated by a “physician-directed team of specialists.” These behavioral health specialists may include licensed counselors, nurses, and case managers. The four individuals polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing — two alumni and two loved ones — submitted an average rating of 3.25 out of five stars for the staff’s level of experience and training.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility has a total of 81 beds, with 20 designated specifically for detoxing and/or dually diagnosed clients. The four survey respondents provided an average rating of 3.5 out of five stars for the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep. Yet, they offered a lower average rating of 2.25 stars for the facility’s exercise opportunities and leisure activities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave polarizing opinions of the facility. Although one respondent praised the food, they offered one out of five stars for the facility's counseling options, family participation in treatment, and the experience level of the staff. “Care of patients could have been better. Some of the nurses were mean and rude,” the former client commented.

The other former client disagreed, submitting five stars for the facility's level of family participation and the amount of counseling options. The alum also cited the counselors, physicians, and staff as strengths of the facility.

Elsewhere online, Frye received mixed reviews. On Google, the facility earned two five-star reviews and one one-star review[1], though no commentary was left. And of the five reviews on Yelp, two were positive and three were negative.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing were both moderately critical of the facility. Agreeing with the dissatisfied former client, both respondents gave two out of five stars for the facility's counseling options and either one or two stars for its level of family involvement.

“The personnel really try to help and seem to care,” a loved one commented, but continued: “The doctors had hardly any contact with the patients.” Critical of the level of family involvement, the other loved one added that there were “no family meetings with doctors.”

FINANCING

Frye Regional Medical Center accepts a range of private insurance plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and MultiPlan. Medicaid and Medicare is also accepted, and financial assistance may be available to clients who qualify.

[1] https://goo.gl/KBUkch
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/frye-regional-medical-center-south-campus-hickory
