Editorial Review

ABOUT DURHAM RESCUE MISSION

Durham Rescue Mission (DRM) offers substance abuse treatment as part of its homeless shelter services in North Carolina’s Triangle area. This facility’s Christian faith-based, long-term residential rehab operates gender-separate programs. Of the state’s 489 treatment facilities, DRM is one of just 18 (3.7 percent) to provide space for children to stay with their mothers in treatment.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Victory Program, Durham Rescue Mission’s 12-month recovery program, addresses whole-person recovery in three phases. The first six months are education-oriented. In addition to addiction, clients learn about spiritual disciplines, family health, work ethic, personal finance, computer usage, and career preparation. Clients are not allowed to work for the first six months.

The second phase focuses on biblical counseling, along with access to legal aid and job-specific training. During the program’s final phase, clients work an apprenticeship with one of DRM’s various community outlets (such as a thrift store), and can receive financial assistance toward continuing toward educational or vocational goals.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Many Durham Rescue Mission staff members are former clients of the facility. The co-founder and CEO comes from a family background of addiction. DRM’s website does not include staff licensing information, but lists counselors, chaplains, “encouragers,” and educators on the treatment team.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Durham Rescue Mission shelter has beds for 270 men and 130 women and children, up to 12-years-old. The number involved in the Victory Program is not specified on the facility’s website. Clients are expected to contribute to their care through performing chores on-site. Childcare and activities are provided, and the mission has men’s and women’s choirs. In the spring of 2018, DRM began construction on affordable housing for former shelter clients continuing their education locally.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received feedback from former clients for Durham Rescue Mission; however, reviews elsewhere online provided mixed feedback for various programs of the mission.. On Google, 27 individuals contributed to an average rating of 3.1 out of five stars. Repeated criticism cited the mission’s strictness, staff rudeness, and issues with restricting clients from outside work for six months and them requiring DRM placement. About half a dozen complained of rejection by the facility or other concerns related to judgment.

A few mentioned cleanliness issues, including two citing mold on-site. More favorable reviewers tended to praise the program’s openness and supportiveness. “The staff at DRM did not judge me according to my past; they were only concerned with what I was going to do with my future,” one alum wrote in a representative review.[1]

Facebook revealed an average rating of 4.6 out of five stars for Durham Rescue Mission, based on 46 opinions, including reviews which the facility may be able to manage; some were for DRM thrift stores. About 10 Victory Program alumni were split evenly. Half shared criticism in keeping with Google trends, along with concern about counseling limited to Christian teaching and a lack of oversight of residents.

Five alumni reported that the program was successful in beginning their recovery. They tended to represent DRM treatment as hard but worth it. In a representative review, K.M. wrote: “If you want to change, and get a new start in life, people are there who have been through some war zones that can and will help you.”[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date offered overall positive feedback for Durham Rescue Mission. The relative concurred with most alumni reviewers that treatment was effective, reflected in a maximum five-star rating. Meals and nutrition received the same, along with four stars apiece for the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, the staff’s level of training and experience, and family participation. This reviewer rated holistic offerings and exercise and leisure opportunities just three stars apiece.

Two reviews by family members on Google mirrored the split among alumni, with one star accompanying concerns about restricted job searches and five stars granted by S.M., who reported that their relative was “getting help and encouragement and doing very well there.”

FINANCING

Treatment and shelter costs (averaging $5,000 per year together) are covered by private donations and revenue from affiliated thrift stores. This facility does not accept insurance.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/DurhamRescueMission/reviews/?ref=page_internal
