ABOUT BEACON CENTER OUTPATIENT – UTICA

Beacon Center has been providing outpatient treatment to people struggling with substance use disorder since 1990. The facility has eight locations throughout western and central New York State, including a sober living house.

The Utica location offers a variety of outpatient services for adults and adolescents, including an intensive outpatient program (IOP), gender-specific programing, general outpatient services (OP), and a specialized group for clients with co-occurring disorders. The facility also provides medication-assisted treatment (MAT) at its facility in Rome, which is about 20 miles away. It's one of just 146 (11%) New York facilities to have an opioid treatment program.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Beacon Center’s philosophy is rooted in the disease concept of addiction. All clients receive a comprehensive assessment upon intake to develop an individualized treatment plan. These assessments include medical examinations, toxicology tests, and thorough histories of mental, psychosocial, legal, and occupational status.

The IOP is designed to help clients identify relapse triggers, practice new coping skills, and build self-esteem. Clients participate in nine hours of counseling a week, which includes both group and individual therapy.

There is also an adolescent and young adult program, which offers weekly individual therapy, group counseling twice weekly, and a family day once a month. Family member involvement is strongly encouraged as part of this program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Led by a medical director, the treatment team is made up of certified alcohol and substance abuse counselors and several doctors. The two loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com to date both gave the facility five out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience. "The Counslers are very much in tune with their clients," one wrote.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Albert O. Nichols sober living house is located in a fairly nondescript, two-story house in a residential area of Herkimer, which is about 16 miles from the Utica clinic. The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing both gave Beacon Center's Utica location five out of five stars for its cleanliness and its accommodations and amenities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

While Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, the Utica location earned two one-star ratings on Google[1^] from former clients who were unhappy with their treatment. "This place is a joke and they don't care about their clients!" Noted Marie in a representative review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

To date, the two loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave Beacon Center's Utica facility mostly positive feedback. In addition to praising the staff, they also indicated that they felt involved in the treatment process and awarded the facility five out of five stars for its family participation. "I would highly recommend it. They encourage family to help and keep them informed," noted Jennifer in a representative review.

The only complaint was a desire for longer treatment programs.

WHAT STAFF SAY

While they both had issues regarding work politics, the two staffers who evaluated the Utica facility on Indeed[2] indicated that the treatment was solid.
