ABOUT ERIE COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER (ECMC) - CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY AND PSYCHIATRIC CARE

The Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) is a nonprofit corporation that runs a community hospital in Buffalo, which provides a wide range of medical services. The hospital's behavioral health department provides a comprehensive range of services for psychiatric and mental health disorders as well as alcohol and drug addiction, including one of the largest chemical dependency departments in Western New York State.

ECMC provides one of New York State's 51 hospital-based detox programs, as well as inpatient care, a residential center, and outpatient programming. Addiction treatment is available in both English and Spanish, and the hospital also has a psychiatrist on-site in the emergency room.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

ECMC uses evidence-based therapeutic methods, in individual, group, and family therapy settings. The center's doctors use medications to treat addiction, when necessary β€” for instance, the center is one of the 61.3 percent of rehabs in New York State that offer a Suboxone program for opioid addiction. ECMC's Suboxone program also includes counseling and physician visits. Dually diagnosed clients can be accommodated, and there's special programming for those diagnosed with addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Chemical dependency evaluations are available between 8 a.m. and 2 a.m. daily. Clients who require intensive attention are referred to the Substance Intervention Program for detox and inpatient care. The next most intensive level of care is the on-site residential program. ECMC also runs three outpatient programs, including a program that provides vocational rehabilitation (positioning the center among the 52.3 percent of New York State-based rehabs that offer employment counseling for clients).

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The department employs numerous psychiatrists and physicians. Feedback from the 13 individuals Rehabs.com surveyed on the staff's level of training and experience was lukewarm, skewing positive:

Staff Experience and Training: 3.6/5

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

ECMC's psychiatric facilities offer 132 beds total. For those struggling with addiction, there are 18 detox beds and 20 beds for residential care. The 13 individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the center's upkeep and amenities gave lukewarm-to-positive feedback:

Facility Cleanliness and Upkeep: 4.1/5
Exercise and Leisure Offerings: 3.4/5

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The four alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mostly positive feedback. In their comments, the reviewers repeatedly praised the center's staff, who were described as "exellent," understanding, and encouraging. More than one reviewer praised the group therapy, too: "Groups were effective... good experience," one anonymous reviewer wrote in a typical comment. And in a particularly glowing review, alum Tanya added: "They detected not only did I have substance abuse problems but MENTAL health issues."

Likelihood to Recommend: 4.75/5
Family Participation: 4.5/5

Though they indicated that, despite good extracurricular activities, the program itself was somewhat narrow:

Exercise and Leisure Offerings: 4.25/5
Counseling Options: 3.25/5
Holistic Offerings: 3.25/5

Secondary sites don't currently yield any feedback on the inpatient behavioral health unit, but an outpatient facility in the network has mostly positive reviews on Google, with a 4.3 out of five-star average rating based on four reviews.[1] "It very helpful to me..." wrote alum Edward; "Grandioso buen serbisio," Jose added in the only other piece of commentary.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Feedback from the eight loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date was more mixed. Two loved ones described the center and its staff as caring and welcoming β€” "Welcome everyone with home feelings," one reviewer wrote anonymously. On the other hand, two other loved ones cited cleanliness as a weakness of the facility. Otherwise, there's little overlap between the comments, which variously cite outdatedness and a lack of evaluations as weaknesses of the facility.

The reviewers agreed with alumni about the mediocre holistic offerings and counseling options, and also gave a lower rating than alumni for the center's family participation.

Family Participation: 3.5/5
Counseling Options: 3.3/5
Holistic Offerings: 3/5

Overall, loved ones offered mixed opinions concerning how likely they'd be to recommend the facility to friends and family.

Likelihood to Recommend: 3.3/5

WHAT STAFF SAY

The single staffer polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend treatment at ECMC. "Strengths: Numerical Know-How, Insider’s Insight, Project Leadership, Sustainability," they wrote, giving the facility five stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders and four stars for its family participation and counseling options, but just two stars for its holistic offerings.

FINANCING

According to its website, ECMC accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances (accepted at 45.4, 87.5, and 79.1 percent of New York State-based facilities, respectively), and offers financial assistance for qualifying clients. The thirteen reviewers polled on the center's affordability offered moderately positive feedback:

Affordability: 3.5/5

CONCLUSION

In 2018, ECMC developed a number of initiatives to expand its chemical dependency services, including increasing its detox beds by 10. In addition, ECMC began collaborating with a number of organizations to improve access to detoxification services, including Save the Michaels, Seneca Nation, Sprout Health, VA Medical Center, and Buffalo first responders.

[1] GoogleReviews
