ABOUT DART

The Community Action Organization (CAO) of Erie County is the official antipoverty agency of Erie County, operating more than 50 locations in the west New York county, each of which aims to help families improve their quality of life and achieve self-sufficiency. Among those services in DART โ the drug abuse, research, and treatment program โ which provides outpatient methadone maintenance treatment for individuals aged 18+ who are struggling with opioid addiction.

CAO's clients must be low-income residents of Erie County, meeting Health and Human Services poverty guidelines.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Admissions are conducted between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays.

Applicants must be able to show that they have been using opiates for at least a year, and must have previously participated in one abstinence-based treatment experience.

The program uses methadone to ease the client's withdrawal symptoms and cravings, so that they can participate in individual and group counseling, which are provided in conjunction with methadone, and make other positive lifestyle changes. The DART program can also refer clients to agencies that provide support with family, legal, health, mental health, vocational, and housing matters. According to the facility's website, 27 percent of clients improve their housing situations and 51 percent secure and maintain employment, following treatment on the DART program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team consists of an MD, nurses, and counselors, all of whom specialize in treating individuals who are addicted to opiates. The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility three stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave underwhelming feedback. "It was decent," the anonymous reviewer wrote, giving the facility three stars for its holistic offerings, two stars for the overall quality of its individual counseling, and one star for the overall quality of its group counseling.

At the time of this writing, secondary sites yielded mixed review coverage: a three-star rating and a four-star rating, both left on CiteHealth.[1] "The Dr is very profesional and he explains all aspects of your care, it was refreshing to be with a Dr that clearly enjoys what he does!," one reviewer wrote anonymously; however, the other reviewer was displeased about advice from the center's physician about mental-health medications.

FINANCING

The DART program accepts Medicaid and private insurance, and offers a sliding fee scale for uninsured clients. The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date indicated that they had used state or federal insurance to pay for their treatment, but that treatment was not worth its cost.

[1] http://citehealth.com/rehab-centers/new-york/cities/buffalo/cao-drug-abuse-research-treatment-program#reviews
