ABOUT RESEARCH MEDICAL CENTER

Based in Kansas City, Mo., Research Medical Center is a hospital and emergency room offering a broad range of medical services, including behavioral health treatment in the on-campus Research Psychiatric Center. One of 10 hospitals in the Kansas City area operated by healthcare network HCA Midwest Health, Research Medical Center provides both inpatient and outpatient-based care for adults and teens struggling with a range of behavioral and mental health disorders, including alcohol and drug addiction.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility's website, treatment is multidisciplinary and primarily composed of individual and group therapy utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) alongside a variety of other evidence-based therapeutic modalities.

Inpatient care can treat a variety of disorders, including dementia, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, and schizophrenia, as well as alcohol and drug addiction. Through therapy and pharmacological intervention, as indicated, the goal of inpatient care is to quickly stabilize the patient and refer them to a less intensive level of care. The center is one of 87 treatment facilities (30.4 percent) in Missouri to also offer a partial hospitalization program (PHP).

For those requiring less intensive treatment, general outpatient care options include individual, group, and family therapy. Outpatient programming is offered either as an entry into care, or as a step-down program.

The center has a dedicated program and unit for active-duty service members, called the STAR Program that addresses stress management related to PTSD, trauma, addiction, and recovery.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Inpatient treatment is conducted by psychologists and psychiatrists. Research Medical Center is one of 41 treatment facilities (14.3 percent) in Missouri to be accredited by the Joint Commission.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings; however, four individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mostly positive ratings to all metrics of the facility's accommodations, including the facility's meals and nutrition, exercise and leisure opportunities, and its cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility overall positive feedback. While they tended to agree that most metrics were positive, including on exercise and leisure as well as level of support from staff, they disagreed on the facility's holistic offerings and affordability. "If I had the money I would love to do counseling again and get on meds, but I just can't afford," one anonymous alum wrote. However, offering four-star ratings for the facility's ability to treat co-occurring disorders and its counseling options, the other alum wrote: "I really like the staff that work with me get back right."

At the time of this writing, secondary review sites yielded mixed reviews that skewed positive of the hospital as a whole, with average ratings of 4.2 out of five stars based on over 500 reviews on Google[1], 3.7 stars based on over 600 reviews on Facebook[2] (where the center can manage its own page), three stars based on 18 reviews on Yelp[3], and 1.5 stars based on six reviews on YellowPages.com.[4]

The positive reviews repeatedly described excellent care while negative reviewers tended to cite disorganization, poor billing practices, long wait times, and difficulty obtaining information and other services.

WHAT FRIENDS AND FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing, of two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com, one gave the facility generally positive feedback, while the other gave neutral feedback that skewed positive. While both loved ones gave high marks (four or five stars) for the level of staff support, counseling options, and affordability, they disagreed on other metrics, such as the effectiveness of treatment and family participation.

"Understanding. We rather quickly got to the core of what appeared to be alcohol dependency and ended the cycle," one anonymous loved one wrote, reflecting the difference of opinion on treatment effectiveness.

FINANCING

According to their website, Research Medical Center accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and TriCare, along with a number of private health insurance policies.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/ResearchMedicalCenter/reviews/
[3] https://www.yelp.com/biz/research-medical-center-kansas-city
[4] https://www.yellowpages.com/kansas-city-mo/mip/research-medical-center-478931843?lid=478931843
