ABOUT KANSAS CITY RESCUE MISSION - RECOVERY PROGRAM

Founded in 1950 and headquartered in downtown Kansas City, the Kansas City Rescue Mission (KCRM) is a Christian organization that offers homeless shelters and one of the state's 25 (13.7 percent) residential recovery programs for homeless men and women who are struggling with problematic substance use.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Men and women are treated on gender-separate programs. The men's shelter supports more than 1,400 men a year, and the women's is home to just 20 women at any one time. Many of the women who use the center's services are survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and, accordingly, the program is designed to help women to process these experiences.

For many, the shelters provide food, showers, a safe place to sleep, healthcare, and recuperative care. For those who choose to use the treatment service โ€” which, according to the KCRM, many do once they've sampled the shelter โ€” there's also a six-month residential recovery program. Each client on the recovery program is assigned a case manager and a counselor, with whom they meet regularly. The men's program offers extensive Bible study sessions as well as Bible-based life skills classes, GED preparation, and adult high school. Women work to achieve a reliable income, appropriate housing, a job or volunteer placement, a support network, and mental health and addiction support plans.

For men only, there's a transitional living program, where successful graduates can stay for up to two years while building their careers and saving for a permanent home. Clients in the transitional program must continue to meet with their counselors and be active at church during their stay.

KCRM operates learning centers for men and women, designed to nurture employable and marketable skills and help clients to secure employment. The women's center has been limited by space restrictions, though KCRM has been fundraising to extend the facility.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

KCRM employs a chaplain and case managers. There is currently no further information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff. Additionally, the sole individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Men and women stay at gender-separate facilities. The women's center offers 20 beds, while the men's center is considerably larger. There is currently no further information provided by KCRM regarding its living arrangements and related offerings; however, the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility four stars for its cleanliness, accommodations, meals, and exercise/leisure offerings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews directly from alumni of KCRM, and secondary sites yielded mostly positive feedback at the time of this writing, including a 4.3-star average rating based on 29 reviews left on Google, at the time of this writing.[1] Several reviewers mentioned that the center had strict rules, which seemed to be either a positive or a negative, depending on the reviewer's position. Otherwise, several reviewers praised the facility in general terms: "This place is a game changer. No other rehabs can compare.. most go for sobriety, I would imagine, but being sober is so small in comparison to what they leave there with. I have never in my life felt such love, support, and compassion from total strangers," S.L. wrote in a representative review. One reviewer found the center very restrictive, particularly in its religious bent.

On the center's Facebook page, which it does have the ability to manage, over 200 users generated an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars to date.[2] Many of these comments praised the religious aspect of programming and credited treatment at this facility with changing their lives; however, a few one-star reviewers felt negatively about the incorporation of religion.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend this facility. "Since leaving the program two years ago, she has been clean since. The program really worked for her!" the reviewer wrote anonymously, also praising the center's communication with families and the appropriateness of its programming for their cousin. They gave the facility three out of five stars for its family participation and its admissions and discharge policies, and four or five stars in almost all of the 13 remaining treatment metrics. In particular, five-star ratings were awarded to the center's treatment effectiveness and its holistic offerings.

FINANCING

KCRM accepts donations and has extensive fundraising drives, indicating that the cost of treatment is at the very least heavily subsidized. The organization's website does not, however, absolutely confirm that treatment is offered free of charge to clients, and the single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date remained neutral on the question of the center's affordability.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/kansascityrescuemission/reviews/?ref=page_internal
