Editorial Review

ABOUT SOUTHEAST MISSOURI BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Southeast Missouri Behavioral Health, Inc., (SEMO-BH) is a community-based, nonprofit agency that has provided treatment to individuals struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health treatment in the southeastern region of Missouri for more than 30 years. The Park Hills location acts as the agency's administrative arm, and facilitates outpatient treatment and social services for a diverse clientele.

Medication assisted treatment is available through physicians in the community. Sister locations are in Farmington and Pilot Knob.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Admissions are accepted on an around-the-clock basis, including holidays.

The agency's outpatient program, known as Comprehensive Substance Treatment and Rehabilitation (CSTAR), is offered at three distinct phases, and multiple levels of care. Beginning with Level I, the most "structured and intensive" stage, individuals can expect to receive their primary treatment.

After a set amount of time, clients move on to Level II, the "intermediate" rehabilitation stage, which offers a menu-style range of therapies. Lastly, Level III offers the least intensive treatment and focuses on providing continued support and assistance after gains made in the first two phases.

Family programming is highly encouraged, and consists of family therapy and educational classes on parenting skills, mental health education, and family issues. In addition, counseling services, such as referrals to 12 Step programs including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) programs, transitional and supportive housing, and case management programming are available.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes licensed substance abuse counselors, case managers, group facilitators, social workers, nurses, and behavioral health technicians. The three individuals polled to date by Rehabs.com on the staff's level of experience gave an average rating of four out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility generally mixed feedback. Alumni awarded high four and perfect five-star ratings for the facility's ability to treat co-occurring disorders, the staff's level of training and experience, and the treatment effectiveness. However, meals and nutrition was rated poorly, receiving two-star reviews from two of the alumni. One alum wrote that the facility was "dirty" and gave a one-star rating for the facility's cleanliness.

Alumni commentary tended to praise the staff, but many felt that the staff and treatment were hampered by excessive bureaucracy and a by-the-books approach. One alum lauded the "experienced staff," but felt that counseling "sessions are fairly repetitive." Another alum, C.E., felt that the facility had an odd fixation of "paperwork," and wrote, "much paperwork not enough treatment with deep rooted personal issues."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Rehabs.com has received one review from a loved one to date. Loved one Christal gave one- out of five-star ratings for all aspects of the facility’s treatment services, including treatment effectiveness, family participation, and affordability. She one wrote: "It was not a good experience for my loved. As soon as treatment was over went back to doing drugs... He is very manipulative and manipulated the whole staff to believe he didn't have a drug problem."

WHAT STAFF SAY

On Glassdoor, the facility received 2.9 out of five stars from eight reviewers to date.[1] A former administrative employee spoke highly of the "training opportunities" and of the "good people trying to do the best for their clients and employees." Yet they went on to tell of "inconsistencies in management and lack of follow-through."

FINANCING

The facility accepts many PPO and HMO insurance plans, Medicaid, participates in Employee Assistance Programs (EAP), and offers sliding scale fees.

[1] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Southeast-Missouri-Behavioral-Health-Reviews-E796879.htm
