Editorial Review

ABOUT KPEP

Located in Kalamazoo, Mich. and founded in 1980, KPEP is a social services program offering community corrective services as an alternative to incarceration. As part of their services, KPEP offers one of the 89 (18.6 percent) residential treatment programs in the state, outpatient-based programs, and transitional housing services to clients struggling with chemical dependency. Detox services are not available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

KPEP's programming combines a work-therapy model with evidence-based modalities. In the residential program, clients are assessed and given an individualized treatment plan. Clients receive case management services and must complete 60 hours of community service as part of their residential treatment.

Residential treatment also includes employability skills improvement and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The intensive residential program lasts 90 days and offers GED classes to clients if requested.

Outpatient programming includes a domiciliary intensive outpatient (IOP) program lasting 30-90 days that involves daily CBT programming. IOP includes specialized group counseling for young clients, sex offenders, and individuals who struggle with anger management. In each program, clients are assessed for various behavioral deficiencies and treated with CBT-oriented treatments. Services also include drug court and transitional housing.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

KPEP employs therapists, a limited license psychologist, counselors, group facilitators, and support staff among other employees. The program director has about 25 years of experience in community corrections program management. In the state of Michigan, 97.1 percent of all substance abuse treatment centers have higher education requirements for staff. The single Rehabs.com survey respondent to date provided five out of five stars for the staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Little information is available about KPEP's accommodations. Clients are advised to bring a week's change of clothes, toiletries, alarm clock, and a book. The facility will provide a hygiene kit, bed linens, and a towel. Clients may not bring any glass items, items containing alcohol, aerosol, or narcotic medications. As of this writing, the sole Rehabs.com survey respondent provided a five-star rating for the facility's cleanliness and maintenance, though gave a lower, three-star rating for accommodations and amenities overall.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received reviews from alumni as of this writing, but 27 users on Google reviews to date rated the facility an average 3.2 out of five stars.[1] Written comments tended to be conflicting. One reviewer compared the program favorably to others, while a negative reviewer advised against the program. Alum J.P. praised the "Great administration," whereas D.B. felt the staff was "under trained." One-star reviewer A.M. wrote, "Mental health is not a priority here and they don't care about the people who are here having mental illness at all," a sentiment that other reviewers touched upon as well.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave KPEP mostly favorable ratings, giving the center four and five stars in most categories, including family participation in treatment, holistic treatment offerings, counseling options, and effectiveness in treating co-occurring mental health disorders; however, when asked if treatment at KPEP was worth the cost, the sole respondent disagreed.

In comments, the anonymous loved one indicated that KPEP's program was adequate for helping clients recover but that weaknesses included an "open campus" which was "always packed."

WHAT STAFF SAY

On Indeed, nine reviewers to date rated KPEP an average 3.7 out of five stars, with five positive reviews, three mixed, and one negative.[2] The negative reviewer criticized the facility for rigid upper management and poor living conditions for clients, but more positive reviewers enjoyed the good teamwork among staff despite the lack of structured schedules. One pleased staffer wrote, "It’s an opportunity to give back to the community;" although some reviewers felt that management was disinterested with facility problems or improvements.

FINANCING

Little information is available about accepted insurance policies or cost of treatment on KPEP's website, though the single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date provided four out of five stars when surveyed on the center's affordability.

CONCLUSION

As reported in a March 2017 WWMT article, KPEP recently opened the Walnut and Park Coffee Shop, a coffee shop run entirely by KPEP participants.

[1] https://goo.gl/R7gAT6
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Kpep/reviews
