ABOUT GRAND RAPIDS COUNSELING SERVICES

Western Michigan's Grand Rapids Counseling Services (GRCS) offers outpatient treatment to individuals struggling with mental health problems, substance use disorder or co-occurring disorders. With an emphasis on helping clients to meet court and professional agency requirements, the facility also offers Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and US Department of Transportation (DOT) assessments. GRCS is one of 126 treatment facilities in Michigan (about 28 percent of all facilities in the state) to provide DUI services. Several group educational sessions are available in Spanish.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

In addition to substance use disorder, counseling can be arranged to address a variety of mental and behavioral health concerns, including anxiety, depression, grief, relational challenges, and occupational matters.

The bulk of services, however, focuses on drug and alcohol use and consequences. Assessments, classes, and counseling groups at GRCS are designed to meet government mandates. All provide education and guidance on addiction, recovery concepts, relapse prevention, coping strategies, and decision making. Some classes address specific substances, including alcohol, marijuana, and opiates.

The facility's main substance abuse treatment group meets for four weeks. Other groups focus on anger management, domestic violence, relapse prevention, and nutritional therapy.

US DOT assessments related to the restoration of a client's license in a safety-sensitive profession involve individual meetings, coordination of treatment, follow-up evaluations, and official reports.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes licensed professional counselors, master's-level therapists, licensed master social workers, and certified alcohol and drug counselors. The one loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave GRCS four out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The counseling center in Grand Rapids is accessible by public transportation and provides services during weekday, evening, and Saturday morning hours.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

While Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, GRCS received two five-star ratings on its Facebook page[1], which the facility can manage. "A great place to get the necessary counseling/therapy that your looking for," Eric wrote in a representative review.

WHAT FRIENDS AND FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date, an anonymous 26 to 39-year-old female, gave GRCS mostly positive feedback. She awarded the facility four or five stars for most metrics evaluated, including cleanliness, counseling options, administrative and discharge procedures, and treatment of co-occurring disorders. "This would be a great rehab for anyone who is really motivated to get help," the reviewer wrote.

FINANCING

GRCS publishes its fees in detail online. Costs range from $40 for a one-hour relapse prevention group to $70 for each hour-and-a-half substance abuse treatment session. A sliding fee scale is available for general counseling, and the facility accepts insurance coverage from Blue Cross Blue Shield, Priority, and the Blue Care Network at the time of this writing. It is among the 59 percent of Michigan facilities that offer sliding scale fees.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/GrandRapidsCounselingServices/reviews/
