Editorial Review

ABOUT FOREST VIEW HOSPITAL

Located seven miles southeast of downtown Grand Rapids, Mich., Forest View Hospital is a private psychiatric hospital that offers inpatient care, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and outpatient medication management for children, adolescents, and adults. Substance abuse is treated via a co-occurring disorders program available at either inpatient or PHP levels. Medical detox is available on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility’s website, treatment prioritizes evidence-based practices, though there are also three AA meetings on-site every week, indicating that Forest View also encourages 12-step participation.

The co-occurring disorders program begins with a comprehensive assessment of the individual’s psychiatric and substance abuse history. The center uses a Stages of Change model to encourage the client to set and achieve realistic goals, thus playing an active role in their own recovery. The program provides education on both the mental illness and the substance abuse, alongside therapeutic services focusing on relapse prevention, grief and loss, stress management, and reducing cognitive distortions rooted in shame. Clients’ families are strongly encouraged to play an active role in treatment.

The PHP runs Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and can accommodate specialty programs such as eating disorders, psychological trauma, and co-occurring disorders. The program is offered in a group therapy setting, and includes dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), medication education, and sessions on managing depression, anxiety, and anger.

A medication management clinic provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management on an outpatient basis.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, staff includes psychiatrists and internal medicine clinicians. The four individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff’s level of training and experience gave it a 3.25 out of five star average rating.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Visitors are allowed at designated hours. There is currently no further information provided on the facility's website regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however, the four individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center’s accommodations gave them an average rating of four out of five stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend this facility, and gave it a perfect five-star rating for the overall quality of its group counseling, and four stars for its staff support, though just one star for its holistic offerings. “The aftercare counseling was good,” the reviewer wrote anonymously.

At the time of this writing, secondary sites yielded mostly negative feedback, with a 2.3-star average rating based on 56 reviews on Google. [1] Reviewers repeatedly cited a lack of proper care and attention, and even rudeness from staff. “Many of the doctors and nurses are very rude, condescending, and don't listen. We were lucky when we did get the occasional caring nurse or doctor,” one reviewer wrote in a representative review on Google.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The four loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mostly positive feedback: three of them would recommend this facility, while one remained neutral on the question. The four reviewers gave the center average ratings of four stars, 3.75 stars, and 3.25 stars respectively for its family participation, exercise and leisure offerings, and counseling options. Two of the four reviewers credited the facility with their loved one’s lasting sobriety. “I think this is a great facility and you would get great care my family member was there for a 90 day program and we've had wonderful results,” one loved one wrote.

However, one reviewer indicated that treatment had not been effective for their loved one, and added: “Any treatment given only for a week or less can hardly be effective.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

At the time of this writing, secondary sites yielded mixed feedback from staff. On Indeed the facility earned a three out of five star rating based on eight reviews from former and current employees. [2] While the staffers praised their coworkers and the counselors, they found management to be disorganized and lacking in communication.

On Glassdoor, the facility has an average rating of 2.7 stars across eight reviews, and reviews mirrored those on Indeed: strong staff, poor management. “Pros: Coworkers, working with the patients, team work, fast paced (can be good or very bad.) relational building, having each other's backs when the unit gets rough.
